IKEA Is Coming to Queens
« on: August 13, 2016, 03:41:05 PM »
IKEA apparently is coming to Queens. I just participated in a focus group on the topic. Technically, I'm not supposed to say anything about it (lol), but it was too exciting not to mention.

Where exactly? I have no idea. But many questions centered on these particular topics:

1) How I would handle bringing furniture of different sizes home
2) Proximity, in terms of walking distance to home
3) Proximity to subway (huge focus on this) and availability of parking
4) Free or low-cost delivery options
5) Importance of the restaurant and what is offered by it

I was thinking about possible locations and thought of Sports Authority. On its own, it might not be enough room, but if multiple stories were built, it would be doable. It is right next to the subway and will have parking available.

I was also thinking it could be somewhere in LIC.

It would be great to have an Ikea somewhere nearby, but I would never wish one on our neighborhood or even in neighboring East Elmhurst.  I think the traffic would clog our streets even worse than any parade street closure, but on a daily basis instead of just a few times a year.

An IKEA needs tons of parking and tons of space for the showroom and warehouse.  I can't think of anyplace near us with that much space.

I'm thinking it's a plan B for the Mets parking lot.

I bet it will be a part of Queens that's closer to Nassau County, like Bayside.

Jason, I hope you made some jokes about horse meatballs.

I hope not. That would ruin Bayside.

The New York Times Printing Facility in College Point would be an excellent choice. They seem to be trying to get out of their lease for years. There is access to the public transportation via the 7 train and a bus shuttle, similar to Ikea Red Hook. Easy access for drivers, right off of the Whitestone Expressway and in close proximity to other retailers (BJ's Wholesale Club, Target, Toys R'Us, TJMaxx, PC Richards, Modell's), and plenty of space for parking.
