Do we need to do something to prevent the anti-plaza forces from sabotaging this and getting it reversed as a surprise? I'm just thinking of how the truncation of the Play Street caught us all by surprise. Is Green Agenda on this?

Considering it wasn't our idea, I'm sure they'll keep it around indefinitely.

unfortunately, this past monday morning the pedestrian plaza was a garbage dump. trash, dirty food containers, a million cigarette butts all over the ground. really horrible and filthy. a smoker's paradise, too. there are no trash cans anywhere. people throw stuff on the ground or leave it on the table. this was not planned out very well.

I feel like those tables are leftover from somewhere. I appreciate it, but hope we get something designed for us.

I agree that the Plaza looks disgusting (although I agree with the idea). What are the plans for the Plaza? If there isn't any landscaping planned, can we do some kind of community effort, or will that just be removed?

What a mess! I walked by there late last night and it was disgusting. The street was strewn with litter and the tables were full of left overs. Maybe they need some trash recepticles? I noticed that those provided on the corners were also full & overflowing.

I reluctantly have to agree.  At first I was excited by the idea of a pedestrian plaza and pleased to see people sitting at the tables.  But unless the city commits to keeping it clean, or the people who use it show some respect for the community, I'm going to lobby our elected officials to change things back to the way they were.  I used to enter the subway from there, but it has been disgusting lately.  It is covered with garbage.  Can a rat problem be far behind?  And what about the merchants.  How do you draw customers if they have to wade through trash.  I know it's early, but so far this has not worked out.

You are completely right. The city needs to be involved in maintaining whatthey created. Of course a little help from the community should be welcommed. And the shops there aught to be especially concerned as well as the rest in the area that hope to attract business.

As for rats being far behind - cross over and look around the NW corner of 73rd & Roosevelt where the #7 escalator comes down. That whole area is already infested as is the bottom of the escalator where Broadway & Roosevelt meet.

How about some volunteer efforts in the interim? Going up there with some cleaning items and preventing the sanitation issues from clouding
the pleasure of getting the street closed. Am not one to mind getting my hands dirty for a good cause...

Frankly, I'm not into cleaning up after people who are too lazy to walk to the trash can on the corner. We shouldn't have to enable others like this. The only way to cure this mess is to install more trash containers on that street. This is where the city falls short. They should know better. People are slobs.

Cleaning up after others is not on the top of my pleasure list either. But am only thinking of warding off some negativity temporarily in case
this street closure can be quickly reversed due to sanitation issues. I'd say it's worth picking up a bit to stave off that issue as I think this
was hard won as a local debate on the 73-75th traffic complexities.

Warning: Sarcasm Alert

So which do you think might show a negative side to others about the neighborhood, and bring down
real estate prices?

[1] Police Presence/Sky Cam
[2] Filthy Pedestrian Plaza near the train station exit?

I'm with Taggie. I would volunteer to clean to keep a green space open, as long as there is something more long-term coming in terms of landscaping and use.

Personally, I think the police presence AND this space are a good thing (assuming that it is not trash-strewn forever).

I'm glad someone brought this up.  To my knowledge, Jackson Heights is severely lacking in green spaces.  You have Travis Park where the greenmarket is, but it's just blacktop.  Those in coops have nice gardens to sit in, but those of us in apartments have nowhere nice to go and sit.  This pedestrian plaza is a nice idea but it's ugly.  It's as if the city could care less what Jackson Heights gets.  Here you have these nice green spaces in Manhattan set up with planters, trees, and nice tables and meanwhile, Jack Hts gets some leftover tables and no maintenance men.   If they're going to bother setting up a plaza, we should at least get the same treatment Manhattan gets.  I'm not exactly surprised.  At the same time, there are definitely people here with little respect for their neighborhood.  I can't tell you how many times I see dirty diapers just left in the street for people to walk over.  I mean, come on!  It's disgusting.  I'm not even sure if we did have a nice plaza that people would even care enough to respect it.
