What preparations did you take for the hurricane?

I went out twice today and earlier in the day JH was bustling and lines were moderately long in the shops.  By 6:30, there were very few people on the streets and most of the shops were closed including the major drug store chains.

I walked over to Broadway in Elmhurst and some of the Chinese-owned stores were still open and still selling candles (only the small votive candles were left) and tiny toy-like flashlights.

btw, there is a construction dumpster on 84th St. just south of 37th Ave that is completely full and not secured in any way.  I would imagine some of those wind gusts are going to make that debris into flying debris.

Overnight the wind sounded a lot worse then it actually was.
Con Edison is reporting 20,900 customers in Queens without power.
From looking at their outage map, we have been spared so far.
I don't believe in candles, a couple of new flashlights is good enough for me.

Looks to be a promising week weather wise coming up.
I think the buses will be up and running before the trains tomorrow.
At least alternate side parking will be suspended.

the storm really didn't seem all that bad... though we did discover that my apartment is far from waterproof as a lot of irene came inside to visit, I was up all night hosting her.  :(

I have a generator and just filled it up and made a test start...worked fine. I filled up the truck only. I charged the Ipad and Samsung Tablet but I should have purchased a battery powered radio.  I also bought 2 LED flashlights. from the 99 cent store next to Uncle Peters on Saturday Night around 6 PM.  I tested them right away while I was in Uncle Peters.  One of them didn't work so they changed it.

On Sunday Morning I took lots of photos of Trees that were down...Just depressing.  I didn't want to see the same old depressing things - (I remember Huracan David in '79 in PR...I was 10 but I recall everything flying away..at least I heard it all flying away)  I woke up late...like 8:10 am on Sunday.  My yard had lots of leaves and a few small branches - nothing really.  My neightors had a huge tree fall right on top of their Iron gates...amazingly, it missed their cars.  AMEN!

After my morning drive, I decided that it was safe to take my son Lukas Xavier to the beach...I decided on Rockaway and it was memorable...so much foam...so beautiful to see the birds flying against the wind.  We picked up some shells, but it was difficult to find whole shells.  Most of them were broken, it was surreal..

Time is running out!
