BETTY. Although, back in the 70's I smoked a lot of pot in the ps69 schoolyard and the yard of the Post Office and have suffered plenty of memory loss. BETTY, I believe was the lady in Murray's Deli. It was next door to Olga's Beauty Salon. I didn't see a mention here of Hamberger Express. And who could forget lunchtime at PS69, ordering rice and gravy from  Sammy Wongs' parents place.

Where A Childrens Place is, wasn't there some kind of Bed Bath Beyond type of store. Also, where the Vitamin Store is was a clothes store. I think it was C & C. Something with initials.  Pretty Girl was a store named Joyce Leslie, the best place to buy ur Jou Jou Jeans. Jackson Heights also had the best boutiques to buy real nice shoes. Not these stores know that sell hooker heels.:)
Ciao:)

MarkieKidd,
This is your cousin KW! Saw this site because of an article in the NYT about Starbucks in JH.

I was going to mention Hamburger Express just to show how old I am. I guess this means that finally you are as old as me.

How about Jan's Ice Cream parlor that went out of biz so long ago.

Just remembered there used to be a great burger place on 82nd street...next to the KAY Bee toy store. If I'm not mistaken it was called BURGER NEST...really narrow greasy spoon.

Also, where Rudy Volcano is now there used to be...for a very short time, a book store...used books Cannot remeber the name of the shop though. I do remember though buying my first (and last!) Hardy Boys book there...Of course now I 've heard that the Nancy Drew books were way better! but of course I wouldn't have been caught dead then with a Nancy Drew back then! :D

I remember buying a used copy of Mario Puzo's, The Godfather at that bookstore.  It cost me all of 25 cents!  I also remember the book falling apart on me as I read it.  This worked out well because as I finished one part, I'd pass it on over to my husband to read, so we read it together. ;D

I am not a long-time Jackson Heights resident, but, before we moved in, I visited regularly since my grandmother lived in the neighborhood--and she was a very long time resident: 50+ years, if I remember correctly. I went for a brief time to Hebrew School at the Jackson Heights Jewish Center, when it was on 82nd Street, and I got my first job there, working for Max Weber's catering business. And I remember when the Bollywood movie theater on 37th Road was a porn theater, and there was a gay bar on that same block called the Betsy Ross, if I remember correctly. And where there is now a very fancy hair salon near the corner of 80th Street and Northern Boulevard was a Lee's jeans store, where we used to buy a lot of our clothes.

as I recall the gay bar on 37th Road not far from the Movie Theatre was The Magic Touch. I was way to young to ever go there but I hear it was calssic pre-stonewall style bar. Sorry to have missed that.

There was also a Pizza place on the same block run by Benny and his son Tony, La Concco D' Oro I believe. Gone now of course.

Somewhere in the neighborhood and I forget its original location was the Tant Meiux, sold fancy house wares and decorative things long before Rudy Volcano was the place for that.

I don't remember The Magic Touch; if I am remembering The Betsy Ross correctly, though, I am going back some 30 years. When was it The Magic Touch?

With a lunch counter!

I think I remember this.  Was the counter on the left side of the store, as you entered, up front?
First, do no harm.

It was the Magic Touch as long as I can recall (which is only through the '80s) it's certainly possible that it was Betsy Ross prior to that. We're talking about a small bar that had 1 dark window that could not be seen through correct ?

I too remember eating at the lunch counter at Woolworth's. I loved their greasy fries served by ladies wearing typical 1950s waitress uniforms.

I also loved Ancil House (sp?) but swear it was called something after that and still sold the same kindof off beat items. I loved that place as a kid.

I also remember a photo development place near Roosevelt on 82 that sold Hello Kitty items in the back. It was a treat to be taken there to buy a pen or some Twin Star notebook.

I also remember where the parking garage is now, a bakery and a Hallmark ... then a fire destroyed those stores.

Before the Burger King and before the Roy Rogers, I'm pretty sure there was a men's clothing store there.
