7 train accident
« on: April 05, 2011, 05:17:31 PM »
Someone got hit (and apparently killed?) at the 90th St/Elmhurst stop this morning, but I haven't been able to find any updates about it on line, anyone got the 411?

Were you late to work today because of train traffic?

Well, if you were taking the 7 train, then the reason for that delay was because a man was hit, and killed, by the 7 train at the 90th Street - Elmhurst Ave. Station, according to the NYPD.

Subway service on the 7 line is now back to normal but no details on why the man was hit have been revealed as of yet.

According to sources within the MTA, the incident took place at 9:33 a.m. on the Time Square-bound train.

The NYPD has not yet released the person's identity and, according to the MTA, the person's family members have not yet been contacted.

Yeah, that's the ONLY thing I was able to find. Accident, deliberate, self destructive? This is the second fatality this year on the 7 line....

Is there somewhere online where you can view the statistics of people getting hit by NYC trains?

There was a young high school student killed just last week. :(

Article relating to this unfortunate incident can be found in El Diario/La Prensa Page 4

Un anciano se suicida lanzandose frente al tren 7

Translation: An elderly man commits suicide while throwing himself in front of the 7 train.

Word has it: This 81 year old man frequented Lety's Bakery.

According to the article:  He jumped in front of the train and left a suicide note pinned to his jacket.

Any suicide is an awful tragedy, but I can't understand how somebody could kill themselves this way, knowing what an awful trauma it inflicts on the driver of the train.

So sad, all around.

the thought of someone being that desperate -- and i've known people who've taken their lives -- makes me very, very sad.

but as to what shinjuku is saying, i vividly remember reading a psychology today story back in my high school days that discussed this very point, and said that those who choose a suicide method that leaves (sorry) a big palpable mess do so in part to punish those left behind.

the story specifically referred to slitting of wrists, which was described as relatively painless, but guaranteed to leave trauma for loved ones. on the other end of the spectrum was drowning, an incredibly painful death, with no "mess."

sorry, don't mean to change direction too much....this man's plight is/was quite sad.

As the train was pulling into the station the man jumped in front of it and 4 subway cars
ran over him before the train came to a complete stop. It was a DOA according to the
FDNY radio transmission. It's very sad no matter what age the person committing suicide
is. My prayers go out to the victims family as well as the motorman and train conductor.

As one who was left behind, I can say truthfully that the 'mess' taints your whole view of life forever.

I'm curious why a man that age would want to kill himself. Euthanasia from a medical problem?

No, no, no apology needed at all. I wish more depressed people would think about the effect on others of their acts!!
The way you state it is the way it is. I think of the act as filling the first glass in a champagne tower and not thinking of the glasses below - they might have wanted Pepsi!!

Hmm. Way off topic now.

Enjoy the sunlight today, I know I am!!
