Car break-ins?
« on: October 07, 2010, 06:28:10 PM »
Had my car window smashed in AGAIN today, 2nd time in less than 2 years since I moved here and 3rd break in overall. Anyone else having this problem? luckily I left nothing valuable in the car. Is this issue worse in Jackson Heights? I live in the historic district on 34th avenue.

That really stinks. I hope you have glass insurance. I see a lot of broken glass in the 70's between Roosevelt and 37th. Do you think it's someone wanting to steal anything or the car itself? Or just people who like being destructive?

I think its just to steal what might be inside, or even to bring in business to the glass shops by Citifield? The thing is I thought 34th & 35th avenue were so nice and quiet. =(

I think it's a mix of bored youth and vandals ...

Any questions?

It was a lot worse in the late 80's and early 90's. Everybody had those nothing of value inside the car
signs hanging. It actually made sense to leave your car door unlocked so as not to have your window broken.
Thing is if they pop your lock to get inside that can be a costly fix as well.

I live on 73rd and have noticed a lot more broken glass from smashed windows lately.  A few weeks ago, there were three cars on my street with broken windows.

Car break-ins usually aren't bored kids - it's done for a reason - to steal.

It's definitely a mix of theives and vandals then, because I witnessed and reported last year as three teens walked down 79th, randomly breaking windows and mirrors, not even stopping as they went until I yelled out of the window.

Well, that's depressing! I've never understood the appeal of breaking things or stealing for fun.
