Non-Profit Chhaya CDC Offers Foreclosure Help
by Annmarie Fertoli, Assistant Editor
04/17/2008

The non-profit group Chhaya CDC will host a community forum on foreclosure later this month, in an effort to expand its outreach to the South Asian community.

There are significant gaps in service to Queens’ South Asian community, according to Executive Director Seema Agnani. Additionally, there is little data available on how the South Asian community is being affected by the current foreclosure crisis.

The borough’s largest South Asian enclaves are located in neighborhoods in western Queens, including Jackson Heights, Astoria and Sunnyside, as well as in Jamaica and Richmond Hill. These areas are also experiencing growing foreclosure rates, according to Chhaya.

But Agnani noted that information is rarely broken down by ethnicity — meaning there is no accurate assessment of just how many South Asians living in Queens are being affected by the crisis.

Chhaya organizers hope the group’s community forum, which will be held on Friday, April 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fatema Sweet and Tandoori Restaurant,167-09 Hillside Ave. in Jamaica, will help start a dialogue about the issue.

Chhaya also offers these services to homeowners from its Jackson Heights office, located at 37-43 77th St. For more information, call (718) 478-3848 or visit www.chhayacdc.org
