5:30 am is a bit early for the story I'm thinking about, but I did hear on NY1 that Daniel Dromm and Jose Peralta are scheduled to be there today to talk about the dangers of possible cutbacks to the FDNY, and how that may affect us in the city.

According to Fox News, that is supposed to be happening right now.  (11am Monday)

"Officials will meet in front of the destroyed store fronts at 11 a.m. on Monday morning to discuss how the looming budget cuts may be putting a strain on firehouses and their response times for fires."

Could  be but the fire engine pulled up with siren blaring, not silently.  Poor Tom Kourakos - I feel so badly for him!

Have the remaining stores on that block been able to re-open?  Kelly Cleaners, the fabric store et al?

Demolition began today. Doesn't that seem a bit quick? On a federal holiday, too. Safety issue?

It seems a bit too quick.  Don't various insurance companies have to come and do their own separate investigation?

I believe the structures were deemed unfit by the Department of Buildings and were probably torn down to avoid collapse and or injury.

Exactly what I was thinking Aronan.

Think what would happen if homeless folk or teenagers or someone got to being inside the unsafe location.  Best that is all taken down quickly, holiday or not.
Think before you speak.  Speak your mind.  Mind your business.  Business before pleasure.
Any questions?

Thank you Aronan!

I guess the Fire Marshall's report is the one used for the insurance companies.

Does anyone know how we, as a community, can get details on the origination of the fire.

I walked by a half hour ago and the fronts were being boarded up.  WPIX is still there.  An older woman told me that she was surprised about the fire since she had heard that one of these businesses was closing for good on Thursday.  This was the first I heard of that.  Another woman said she was suspicious shen she heard that all their rents were being hiked.

Why is WPIX still there...? I worked in the media for two different networks and I'm curious..any insight?

Another one of the stories that has come out of this incident is the fact that the mayor plans to close 20 fire houses throughout the city. It's picked up some media attention so it could be the various news organizations are doing stories on how this situation would have been affected by the closings etc.

As for the fire being suspicious, I really doubt it. Fires like that tend to happen in the wee hours of the morning when there's less chance of harm to human life. Also, if the rents were already being jacked up in en effort to clear the lot I don't see the incentive to start a fire. Seems easier , cheaper, and faster to wait out the tenants and then sell the block off to developers.

Does anyone know where Tom Kourakos lives?  Does he live in Jackson Heights? I'd like to get in touch with him.

I think a lot of us are thinking about Tom.  What a wonderful and sweet man.  I will miss dropping my shoes off and talking to him and other old timers in the shop.  He would always let us dog owners bring our pups in which was such a nice treat.

If anybody does have contact info. for Tom, please post so that we can send him some love as a community.  I feel so sorry that he has lost everything at this stage in his life and I would love to tell him we are thinking of him and hoping for the best.
