Dog breeds
« on: February 01, 2010, 12:33:27 AM »
I met a wonderful dog over the weekend -- a Havanese.  I had never heard of this breed before.  Are they common around here?  This one had a lovely personality, friendly but not hyper, didn't bark even when new people came to the door.  Does this breed have any typical personality traits?

This is a photo I found online (not the dog I met).

My parents had a Havanese for a while.  They are a pretty rare Cuban breed that came to the US in the 60s when so many Cubans moved to Florida.  You'll see them in Florida more than elsewhere and there are probably fewer than 10,000 in the States.  They are really sweet dogs with adorable muppet faces. The one my parents had reminded me of a (well-adjusted) shih-tzu personality-wise (but he smelled more "doggy" than the shih-tzu).

Not the most reliable... but Wikipedia does have some good stuff - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havanese

One of my coworkers has a Havanese/Shih Tzu mix.  She loves him... can't tell you his temperament though.  She says that both of her dogs are fat & lazy... hahahah.

A few years ago I was on a job and 3 people had Havanese pups.  They are very sweet natured and since they have hair and not fur, they're okay for people with allergies.  I almost got one myself after spending time with these dogs but ended up getting a toy poodle instead.  But I really liked them.

First, do no harm.
