New Preschool For Jackson Heights

The Jackson Heights Early Learning Center, for children ages 2 to 6, recently celebrated the opening of its new annex, where classes will begin later this month.
For the past few years, JHELC has been operating out of St. Mark’s Church, on the corner of 34th Avenue and 82nd Street. Executive Directors Tammy Rose and Rachel Cabrera say the center’s new annex, at 79-10 34th Ave., gives the center a much-needed permanent presence in the community.
Daniel Dromm, Democratic district leader for the 39th Assembly District, said the new center will help address the needs of new families moving into the area, although the community has a relative lack of preschool and early learning programs for young children.
Both Cabrera and Rose have been working with community organizations to help find space in Queens to house more early education programs.
JHELC operates a preschool program for children ages 3 and 4 and a program for 2-year-olds four days a week at St. Mark’s. But since the space is rented, all the furniture and toys need to be set up and removed daily.
While the center will continue to operate out of St. Mark’s, the new annex allows for an expansion of services to five days a week, which means the center can better cater to working families, Rose said. The annex and the program at St. Mark’s will operate like two separate schools.
