Sripraphai in Woodside has an extensive vegetarian menu, but you have to ask for it. Well worth it. Rice Avenue on Roosevelt is also a Thai place, with many veggie options.

If/when the Tibetan Yak (on Roosevelt) is open, it has some great vegetarian soups and dumplings.

I also like the all-vegetarian Indian buffet on 37th between 74th and 73rd (it's in the back of a sweets shop). Weekend lunch buffet is 7.95.

Mama's Empanadas has a veggie empanada, as well as cheese.

Agreed!  I think it's $6.95 on weekdays, if you're ever around, too.  I always spell this wrong, Marajaha, I think is the name?  The buffet is great!  But I wish takeout was easier.  I"ve only successfully done this once, and I think it was at a  really odd time.  Usually, this place is so crowded with people crowding the sweets counter that it's very hard to order.  They have to go find a waiter, not the person at the counter, to take your order.  Also, all this clamor for the sweets makes me wonder about them, but I have no idea what to order or how to pronounce the names of the items.  Since I don't know what I'm doing, I feel I need to order when there isn't such a crowd.

I had some delicious yellow Daal today.  It's this tiny place on the corner of 72nd St and Broadway.  It says "pure vegetarian" out front, which always makes me happy, since I can simply try anything, even if I have no idea what it is.  I walked in and the place is tiny, just a little counter and about 3 square feet of floor space.  There was a menu posted out front, but I wasn't sure what anything was, and when I walked in, I was confused by the tiny space and nobody was really paying attention to me. So, I was looking down at the glass counter that had little containers of food in it (mostly daal) and the woman behind the counter asked me if I wanted daal, so I figured I should go for it.  I also asked for a piece of the thin, flat bread they had behind the counter.  It was delicious!  Spicy but not too spicy, kind of thin texture.  I dipped my bread in it and spooned the rest.

This surprises me. I thought maharaja, “great king,” was one of the most well-known Sanskrit words in English, from maha “great,” from the same root as much and mega + raja “king,” from the same root as royal, regal and right. I specifically remember the word being discussed on an episode of I Love Lucy when Lucy posed as the maha-rincess of Franistan.

I guess I just don't have the vast knowledge you have.. and I'm a little young to have watched "I Love Lucy" regularly

Actually I remember the word "Raja" from my childhood too - from books like A Little Princess by the same author who wrote The Secret Garden.  A Little Princess was written in 1905 - a hundred years ago.  I hope that doesn't date me!!

Maharaja was also used in the Secret Garden- It's what Mary calls Colin when they meet and he orders her around.

I need to suggest a few vegetarian-friendly places to a vegetarian who is meeting me in JH for dinner.  Are the Vietnamese place (Thai Son) and the Korean place nearby it veg-friendly?  I know Zabb Thai is veg-friendly but that's where we ate last time so I'd like to suggest something new.

Also, what about Coatzingo?  I read through this thread quickly and didn't see it mentioned, but I may have missed it.

Thanks.

OUCH!  I am old enough to have watched 'I LOVE LUCY".  LOL.  That was pretty funny C11106.

I haven't read all the posts here but I used to order a veggie dish that I loved from Arunee Thai.  It was tofu with mixed veggies and I always asked them to throw in a lot of peanuts or cashews. And they did.  It has a garlic based sauce.  YUMMM.  I'm pretty sure they have a bunch of vegetarian dishes on their menu.
First, do no harm.

Sorry, I meant that as a joke, but it doesn't look very nice in writing!

Great suggestions in this thread...

I was quite a regular at the health food store which carries lots of vegetarian options however I noticed lately his prices go up almost weekly.  I realize the rents are increasing but it seems like his buisness is booming (I've been going to him for over 10 yrs at least) I don't think I'll be shopping here any longer. It pays for me to go to Trader joes and even Whole foods and get lots of options. Sad.

I'm vegetarian and I really love Arunnee Thai, 79th and Roosevelt (well, just in from Roosevelt on 79th, heading towards 37th). They will make many of their traditional meat or fish dishes with tofu. Best of all, try the larb tofu. They even have brown rice.

There's a new health food store called Veggie Monster at 61st and Woodside Ave. in Woodside.  It's not a restaurant but you might find it helps you with your shopping.  I was able to find my favorite yogurt there (Liberte low fat peach) for $1.29 which is not a low price, but also not that unreasonable.

There is a longer review of this place on chowhound at http://www.chow.com/places/46537
