Sripraphai in Woodside has an extensive vegetarian menu, but you have to ask for it. Well worth it. Rice Avenue on Roosevelt is also a Thai place, with many veggie options.

If/when the Tibetan Yak (on Roosevelt) is open, it has some great vegetarian soups and dumplings.

I also like the all-vegetarian Indian buffet on 37th between 74th and 73rd (it's in the back of a sweets shop). Weekend lunch buffet is 7.95.

Mama's Empanadas has a veggie empanada, as well as cheese.

I had some delicious yellow Daal today.  It's this tiny place on the corner of 72nd St and Broadway.  It says "pure vegetarian" out front, which always makes me happy, since I can simply try anything, even if I have no idea what it is.  I walked in and the place is tiny, just a little counter and about 3 square feet of floor space.  There was a menu posted out front, but I wasn't sure what anything was, and when I walked in, I was confused by the tiny space and nobody was really paying attention to me. So, I was looking down at the glass counter that had little containers of food in it (mostly daal) and the woman behind the counter asked me if I wanted daal, so I figured I should go for it.  I also asked for a piece of the thin, flat bread they had behind the counter.  It was delicious!  Spicy but not too spicy, kind of thin texture.  I dipped my bread in it and spooned the rest.

This surprises me. I thought maharaja, “great king,” was one of the most well-known Sanskrit words in English, from maha “great,” from the same root as much and mega + raja “king,” from the same root as royal, regal and right. I specifically remember the word being discussed on an episode of I Love Lucy when Lucy posed as the maha-rincess of Franistan.

I guess I just don't have the vast knowledge you have.. and I'm a little young to have watched "I Love Lucy" regularly

Maharaja was also used in the Secret Garden- It's what Mary calls Colin when they meet and he orders her around.

I'm vegetarian and I really love Arunnee Thai, 79th and Roosevelt (well, just in from Roosevelt on 79th, heading towards 37th). They will make many of their traditional meat or fish dishes with tofu. Best of all, try the larb tofu. They even have brown rice.
