St. Michaels Park
« on: November 20, 2009, 02:18:14 PM »
(A little off topic)

Regarding green spaces, I drove by what appears to be beautiful park with plenty of grass (or some turf) by 31st ave & 68th St:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=11370&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.817312,29.091797&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Queens,+New+York+11370&ll=40.756506,-73.899622&spn=0.009557,0.015278&z=16

I just saw a lot of people playing soccer in it.

It's called St. Michael's park:

Has anyone been there before?

Yes, but I believe it belongs to one of the Catholic schools and isn't open to the public. Hope I'm wrong.

St. Michael's Park is totally a public park.

It was redone years ago by the parks department.

So go, have fun, it is a truly unknown space to most, as it is tucked away up a side street.

totally public played many a ELM JACK little league and Babe Ruth games on that field. it was about the best ball field around. It was where I discovered I needed glasses when my catcher came out to me in the 6th inning and asked why I was crossing him up on signals?  My response was I did not see him giving me any
baseball before contacts

are there organized adult leagues playing there?  perhaps JHL could sponsor -- or at least field -- a team...

in any case, if i go there and it's crowded, i'll assume the word got out about this little secret  ;)

The word IS out on this wonderful park. There are many soccer players there every night of the week, usually local teams with
permits. Weekends are lots of games and a fine place to see multi-cultural teams. The basketball courts are small but good and the playground area is nice. Don't count on the toilets working. Also the corner fast food place by the strip joint "Perfection" has surprising tasty items and the workers are really nice.

I checked it out; lot of people there playing football and soccer.  There was still plenty of space.  The children's play area is pretty nice too - with some interesting equipment.  By the way, it's not real grass, it's some kind of turf - still quite nice.
