Having volunteered for a while at the CACC - New York City's shelter of last resort for animals (read: Death Row), I can't help but feel a bit sad when I see more litters of puppies and kittens being brought into the world when many wonderful puppies, kittens, dogs, cats get euthanized every day because they do not have homes.  You will even often see pedigreed animals end up there once their cute puppy/kitten phase is over and when, often due to lack of training on the part of their owners, behavior problems rise.

Yes, puppies and kittens are always cute but I urge people to rescue from shelters rather that purchase them from breeders.

I feel the same way about humans!

I always though that, if there were a "pound" for humans, some people would drop their kids there and walk away.

It's called an adoption agency/foster care.

In dealing with both of those options, there is a level of planning, care, responsibility and openness involved.  I'm talking about people who would just dump kids.

Not always. I ONLY wish that were true! Many children are left abandoned in the street, police stations, hospitals. Just do a Google search for abandoned children; it's not completely unheard of and, in fact, is a growing problem. A lot of abandoned children (specifically babies) are left in garbage dumpsters and, if they survive, get put into child care services.

I must be missing your point then. I don't see how there is any level of planning, caring, responsibility or openness in abandoning ones kids with only the chance to be cared for by strangers and and a pound for dogs? How is there any difference? The ONLY difference I can see is we don't put kids to death, at least not physically.

Yes - you are.  What I said was that turning ones child over to foster care or for adoption are the efforts that require some planning, care, etc. - not abandonment.  We have gotten pretty far off the original subject of pets.

How beautiful they are!  They look so serene and content - a feline version of Madonna & Child depictions.
