Cost of Spaying
« on: June 01, 2009, 08:41:25 AM »
Hi All,

We have a 3 month old shih tzu puppy.  We went to Dr. Tello over the weekend for her first visit to the veterinarian, and he quoted us nearly $600 to spay her.  They said it was based on size and health.  She's a perfectly healthy four-pound dog.  This price seems absolutely ridiculous to me.  Anybody willing to share where they had their dog spayed and how much it cost?

Thanks!

That seems high - although we adpoted our dogs over the years from shelters where they'd already been fixed.

The NYACC has a low-cost spay/neuter program for low income families: http://www.nycacc.org/bigfix.htm

You could also call the ASPCA: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/spayneuter/

and

Bideawee (where we adopted our current pup) http://www.bideawee.org/programs_&_services/veterinary_services/spay_neuter.php

Perhaps they'd have a better price.

Edit - Oops Posted at the same time as another poster.  Those ideas are good too.  :)

Thanks for the advice!

BTW, I called the Jackson Heights Veterinary Hospital on Northern and they said it would be less than $250 for a dog of her size.  I don't think I'll be going back to Dr. Tello.

I used to take my dog to Dr.Tello also. That is of course until he wanted to cut off a piece of her ear to do a biopsy on a growth that was there. CUT OFF A PIECE OF HER EAR?????? I dint think so. I took her to a specialist in the city, they said wait a few weeks, as they usually just fall off. And fall off it did. Besides that, he always kept me waiting in that small room with sick dogs and cats.I had her spayed at Astoria vets on Steinway with a $100 coupon i think i got from the city to defray the cost

Thats why I stopped going to DR Tello. My bill almost gave me a heart attack and that didnt even include the meds which he gave me a prescription for and after finding out that medicine costs $400. I took my dog to Dr. Riehle and paid half including meds. Ask around but if you have time to waste then check out the aspca web site to find out when the mobile van is coming around. We tried it and didnt bother. People line up the night before. We've seen people wait in vans loaded with dogs (probably rescues)

You can also check out www.muffins.org and pay $52 to have it done at a participating vet.

Another vote here for Bide-A-Wee's spay/neuter clinic.  Their charges are generally very reasonable & they took good care of my poodle.  She was back home with me that night, groggy & hiding in her favorite den spot for a day, & then racing around & trying to jump up onto the bed the day after that (I had slept with her on a futon on the floor the first night, but she didn't think much of that arrangement).  I did let her go through one heat cycle (some think that this reduces the risk of incontinence later on in life, & the cancer risk is almost as low as spaying before the first heat), so she was several months older than your Shih Tzu, but I can't think why that would make any difference in price.

I took my pupster to the Humane Society right over the 59th Street bridge (took a livery for $20) and they only charged me $50.  They were fabulous ... very caring and so reasonable.  There is also a pet mobile that is very reasonable for transport or, if your pupster is small take him by public transport.

Also you can call the ASPCA that has a  Mobile unit that parks itself, when it comes to Jackson Heights, on the corner of 89th Street and 34th Avenue.  They spay for free or for whatever you can afford to pay.  Find out their schedule and make an appointment.

Vets should spay for less than cost because it is in the public interest to neuter our animals.

Good luck.
