I actually went in the store and spoke with the owners. Took a lot of chutzpah. I basically asked the reason for those mannequins. He replied that it was to show women with different sizes. It seems he realizes that those mannequins are porn-ish. He also stated they plan to move their shop to 82nd st, and it's some kind of wholesale business. He stated he might tone down the display.

GOOD, say I.  Thanks for the update, Kate.

Wow, Kate, thanks for taking the initiative.   It could well be that the store owners' intent was entirely benign, so it's good for them to receive feedback if the community perceives otherwise.

Kate, I commend you on the action you took.  A few years back, my husband and I did something similar at one of the shops on 82nd Street.  The manager at that time seemed a bit embarrassed, but overall said that this is how woman like to dress in his country and that the men can better visualize their women by admiring the mannequins.  By the way, our willingness to ask about that particular display was prompted by the reaction of an elderly woman as she stood in front of the shop looking appalled.

Here's a photo of the mannequins in question, plus one more from a shop up the street --just to round things out!  (thanks to my friend N. for the photos)

Orzabelle - Accusations of intentional silliness towards the right honorable gentleman uh, erm... Bozo? Pshaw.

Silly would be for me to say, "First they came for the mannequins with enormous mammary glands and I said nothing because I did not display top heavy torsos in my windows." Or suggest that this thread reminds me of the Old Man's lamp in "A Christmas Story".

Both me and the girlfriend will miss them if they go if only because they surpass sexist mores in a very Baudrillardian way, defining the Hyperreality of female frontal sexual appendages or some such po-mo claptrap.

Oh, and we'd giggle like 12 year olds every time we saw them.

When I went into the store, I suggested that the owner perhaps put more conservative clothing, like a jogging suit,  on the "well-endowed" mannequins. I think the skimpy clothing may add to the tackiness. This way he can still use them, but, it might give the overall look a bit more "acceptable" to the "diversity" of the neighborhood. The man gave me his card after I offered to help with some ideas on his new store. Since I have a knack for art and design,  I figured i might be somewhat helpful. Per his card, I think they wholesale perfumes, etc.

From the photos that Shelby posted, the male mannequin seems to be positioned conveniently.  It's as if he's gawking at the other two.  Funny that the male one is dressed conservatively.  ::)

They arer a HOOT !
If we are worried about how this is effecting our teenages, well, lets remove all the super skinny mannequins, and all the super overly gay shirts, etc. etc.

joni, can you point those out for me on the avenue?  And what exactly are "overly gay shirts", and why would this intimidate you?

The shirts do not intimidate me, I was just making a point.  Love JH and it's diversity.

I saw them moving today. It seems they are going to have their new home on 82nd. I wonder if they will be more, um, prominent in the neighborhood. :2funny:
