 Lots of basement flooding, elevators, storage units affected. Not good!

Yes, in this issue, flooding...Jackson HEIGHTS is lucky compared with other NYC neighborhoods.

Our elevation is 79 feet above sea level. Which is kinda a 5 story building.

So, no Mt Everest, but enough to help in floods.

We drove to Whitestone on Thursday and the storm aftermath was unbelievable!  149th street was littered with SUV’s with theirs doors open, and sitting in The middle of the street.
We left JH a and all seemed fine till we turned north. 
I saw nearby businesses on 37th Ave pumping out basements, but overall we were (& are) very lucky!

North of Northern is doing very bad!! Most of us were flooded out. We lost so much. All of our neighbors lost so much. The further you walk up the worse it gets!! President Biden will be here today to survey the damage.

Sorry to hear it. In an asphalted and cemented city, the water has nowhere to go apart from into houses/basements.

Maybe the future is for technology to create a porous material for roads and pavements and cemented areas? Do graveled areas fare better?

The water can be absorbed into the ground. Parks and gardens act as sponges and do that...

You are completely correct.  The city has known this for a long time, but hasn't done much yet.
