37th Avenue "open street"
« on: June 26, 2020, 04:50:25 AM »
I came across this in the Jackson Heights Post,
"Five streets will be opened in partnership with local community groups:
.24 miles of 37th Avenue, from 75th Street to 80th Street on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Thai Community USA) "
If this has previously been posted, I apologize.

No, that's "new news"!

Earlier this year, Mayor DeBlasio promised 100 miles of "Open Streets" to provide more recreation space during the COVID crisis.  So far, about 2/3 of that total length has been announced.

The 34th Avenue Open Street is one of the longest segments.

There's also a section next to Gorman Playground on 85th Street from 25th Avenue to 30th Avenue

And the city just announced a temporary new protected bike lane on Broadway/Northern Boulevard from 34th Avenue to Queensboro Plaza

the mayor rolled this out during a press conference last week, when he announced the 23 newest miles.

closing the avenue is a great idea for dining/drinking, but i worry about drivers not knowing about it (being just one day per week) and issues ensuing.

This would be great!  Let's hope it's true.

The blue barricades are up. very large, legible yellow signs ban traffic. Law-breakers are driving around them and driving down the street as usual. too bad spike strips don't work at low speed.

I wasn't thrilled with how this was implemented today.   Not every block had barriers, so cars were turning onto 37th Avenue, only to discover a block later that through traffic was not allowed.  This created a lot more confusion than there needed to be.   In the future, I hope they use metal barriers like on 34th Avenue, and set up the barriers up on every block.
