74th St vs 82nd St

Putting aside subway/bus access issues...

Does anyone else think 82nd St is kind of a missed opportunity?

74th St is full of delicious restaurants and unique shops

But 82nd St seems so corporate and boring. And strangely difficult to walk down. It seems like the best place on 82nd St isn't even really on 82nd St (Louie's)

82nd street is difficult to walk down due to the lack of stores which are not corporate owned. 74th street needs a major cleaning before I would even consider eating at one of those restaurants.

 Agree on both of these points. Eighty second street is potentially a lovely place but I avoid it because those stores are not of interest to me and it's a mad house to walk through especially as you reach Roosevelt. Definitely a missed opportunity! At one of the TD banks you can see a giant photo mural of what it used to be and it looked much more vibrant with large and tiny stores.
Seventy fourth has better retail, at least in my interests, but it is very dirty on the street. I know that a lot of money is spent keeping diversity plaza clean but still it is a mess. In both cases, it might not take to much to change things but right now they are two sad shopping areas IMHO.

82nd Street on the Jackson Heights side is kinda New Jersey.
82nd Street on the Elmhurst side is like a continuation of Roosevelt Ave. (Target may change that in the future)

74th Street is far more interesting (but yes due to the numbers can get trashy)

The worst thing about trying to get to the Roosevelt Ave station is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to cross Roosevelt Ave at the major marked crosswalk at the lights on the corner of 75th St/Roosevelt.

On the south sidewalk of Roosevelt Ave, food carts and bicycle racks and merchants selling all manner of fluffy things completely block a person's path. You are forced to detour and sneak by in the tiny spaces between the bicycle racks and the food carts and the merchants' tables.

Or via whichever creative obstacle course you can negotiate.

Different strokes for different folks. I shop on 82nd Street all the time, but aside from the TD Bank and a rare trip into Patel Bros., there's nothing on 74th Street for me. And despite the street peddlers on 82nd, it's a far superior shopping experience to 74th.

I love 82nd south of Roosevelt for all the lunch options. There's like 5 south american places right at the start of the block and I know this is a hot topic but its really a convivial place with all the tamale ladies... also, Popeyes, the dollar store, and the cheeeeaaappp grocery stores. I do appreciate north of Roosevelt a little bit with the Gap brands, although I don't shop there myself. I think the sign redesign around the NE corner of Roos/82 about 5 years ago was a mistake that took some character away.


For 74th St, it has a lot more potential. I wish they would close it off completely to traffic.

You are missing out on some of the best food in NYC! I've never gotten sick at any of those restaurants (and I get sick pretty easily usually...)

The new Lhasa Fresh Food location down there is great too, but I wasn't sure whether to count it as part of 82nd St.
