Local tailor/leatherwork recommendation?
« on: October 24, 2019, 02:55:09 PM »
I've done some searching and there are old threads here...but wanted a fresh take.

I'm looking for someone to fix a vintage leather jacket and alter a beautiful new dress that I need to have taken in considerably.  I don't believe either of these are easy fixes, so I want someone who really knows what they are doing.

Any suggestions?  Is Raymond's in Woodside still good? I've heard mixed reviews...

Thanks!

Many tailors won't/can't work on leather as it requires heavy equipment with strong needles. For a minor repair you could try a local shoe repair shop. I had the cobbler near the post office sew up some pocket lining holes in a motorcycle jacket (fabric needed resewing to the leather edges); price was very reasonable, but results were only fair.

If it was a major job, or if it's a jacket of great worth (financial or sentimental) I'd suggest using one of the specialty shops in Manhattan. Here's one: http://6avenuetailor.com/leather-suede-fur-and-sherling-alteration/
