I currently have Spectrum at Earthlink prices (46/mo).... I need to get a new modem and I can't handle renting.....
The Authorized modems for Spectrum or Fios seem either way old (spectrum) or way expensive (fios). Anyone have any favorable experiences navigating this? Must we get the authorized modems?

You can - and should - buy your own, it'll save you money over time. I use the motorola ones, last I checked the only requirement is that they be docsis 3 compatible, but it's been a while so maybe that's changed.
