hello I've just been diagnosed with severe lactose intolerance and have to cut out anything with milk product/whey etc. Where can I get vegan wine? I don't drink daily but occasionally and with the holidays I would like to have some and bring some to parties any places in jh? thanks

From what I understand in my readings of lactose products wine either contains whey or is processed with it and whey is a by product of milk. I am a vegetarian but not vegan and had no clue of this untill being very sick and having a test confirm that I am LI. Not only dairy products contain lactose/whey/casein etc. It is in mixes/breads/processed foods/some vegetables/salad dressing. They even make vegan beer

With wine, it is again in the fining process that animal derived ingredients make an appearance. Finings can be isinglass, gelatin, egg albumen, modified casein (from milk), chitin (derived from the shells of crabs or lobsters) or ox blood (rarely used today). But alternatives do exist in the form of bentonite, kieselguhr, kaolin and silica gel or solution. Also newer methods such as centrefuging and filtering are becoming more popular. The majority of organic wines do not use animal derived finings - but some do, Thorson's Organic Wine Guide by Jerry Lockspeiser and Jackie Gear, lists those wines which are suitable. You might like to note that the Wine Development Board claim that the fining agents are removed at the end of the process with the possible exception of very minute quantities.

  thanks ed for the info. It kind of grosses me out thinking of what I had ingested over the yrs and not know it. I guess I should really investigate everything I put into my mouth!
