IHOP on Northern Blvd closing
« on: August 22, 2018, 09:17:06 AM »
The IHOP on Northern Blvd is closing. User @bychrisbrito on Twitter shared the following photo of a notice posted by the restaurant.

Edited to add text.

The sign reads:

RESTAURANT CLOSURE

To our guests and employees: We are sad to say after many years of business in this community, that this IHOP location has permanently closed its doors.

We thank each of our guests and employees for their support.

We wish the best of luck to all.

sad, but not surprising. weren't they shut for a long spell last year or the year before?

The IHOP was closed for a while due to a fire a few years back.

This place was usually packed, especially on weekends, so I am surprised by its closure.  Weekday business must have been slow, but that may be the same for most locations.

Yeah, weekend business seemed strong. Must have been the weekdays. It’s got to be tough operating an IHOP in a city where alternatives are so closely located to one another. The suburbs makes more sense.

Unfortunately, the real estate it sits on is far too valuable to developers to allow it to remain as is.

Has there been a picture painted about what kind of development will likely come to Northern Blvd? Residential? Commercial? Mixed use? Hotels?

I still think it's a shame the city couldn't have purchased that parcel on Northern closest to Travers park where a car dealership is currently renovating. It would have been a nice idea to enlarge our only park. I guess they spent all their money on that Brooklyn waterfront park Bloomberg promised but forgot to actually buy the land to complete: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/24/nyregion/new-york-buys-last-tract-for-williamsburg-waterfront-park-for-160-million.html

Tho I definitely agree it would have been great to have enlarged Travis park further, this summer I have often been drawn to the new promenades and parks along the East River in Brooklyn and LIC and they are AWESOME.

They're a stunning benefit for the entire city.

the parks along the east river are fantastic. because they're along the east river. the pleasure of a picnic or softball game overlooking honking trucks on Northern Blvd, perhaps a little less so.

While I agree with you dssjh & abcdefghijk 100% about the east river parks appeal, maybe the "active play" part of our park like basketball, volleyball, handball, kickball, tennis, hopscotch etc could have abutted the noisier Northern blvd? It would have saved some of the other spaces for picnics and the like. ;) Oh well. T'was not to be.

the other mitigating factor? the lots on Northern are privately owned. the Greenpoint/Williamsburg mostly fell into public ownership after years of neglect -- and more years of cleansing the near-superfund contamination.

I'm trying to remember where I read this - on a neighborhood group on Facebook, I believe - but the thread, written Hy someone who knows workers there, said that business was fine. The problem was that the cooks had unionized and the absentee, California based owner did not want to have any unionized employees, so he decided to close and sell the location.

As to the Travers comments, yes, we all worked hard to get the City to spend money and buy Rory Staunton Field to expand Travers. So the City has done that.

The promenade along Flushing Bay is actually really nice. I am very concerned what the airtrain will do to it. Also, I wish they would turn those huge spaces in Willet's Point next to Citifield into fields to have a catch in. They are all cleared out and ready

I was always mystified by the unappetizing photo posters of their food in the windows of that ihop. I'd walk by and wonder who would look at a photo of a grey steak and think "hey, that looks delicious, let me go order one of those".  Just stick to photos of the pancakes!
