Don't forget to vote today
« on: June 26, 2018, 01:31:58 PM »
Today is the Democratic Congressional primary for NY-14, with Ocasio-Cortez versus Crowley. Not a lot of people vote in these elections, so your vote really matters.

You can look up your poll site here: https://nyc.pollsitelocator.com/search

Polls are open until 9pm.

The primary for State Senate (Ramos v Peralta) and governor (Nixon v Cuomo) is on September 13.

I was out at I.S. 145 earlier today to vote and was surprised not to see any Crowley people there yet.  Perhaps it's a time of day thing.  That said, Ocasio-Cortez reps were handing out campaign cards.

It's important to vote, but it's ridiculous that there is a second round of primaries in September for the state offices.  Why not a have a single primary for all the contested races.  Only in New York.

it's idiotic and expensive. a friend who lives in brooklyn went to her polling place and found she couldn't vote.

why?

the only contested primary was for the Reform Party line. she voted around 1 PM and said that three votes had been tabulated at her polling place -- staffed by the usual complement of 12-14 paid observers.

The actual reason is because the state party machine doesn't want people who they haven't activated to vote. By keeping the elections at confusing times, they make sure that their organized voters get out and re-anoint the machine candidates, while keeping the "riff raff" away from the polls where they might mix things up for them. The legislature could save money, time and increase turnout by aligning the elections, but they've pointedly decided not to.

The NY Times had an article about this today:  https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/25/nyregion/new-york-primary-congress-state-federal.html
Quote
State lawmakers then could have moved the state primary election from September to June so that they would again line up. Although Democrats favored the switch, Republicans in Albany balked, arguing that because the state legislative session runs through the end of June, they would have no time in their districts to campaign.
