Weekend bodega tacos, San Antonio Farm - 86th/37th
« on: April 10, 2018, 09:14:06 PM »
I happened to notice on instagram that San Antonio Farm Grocery on 86th St. and 37th Ave. has tacos for sale Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I haven't tried them yet, just posting what I discovered online. https://www.instagram.com/p/BhY3dYtAphk/?hl=en&taken-by=tacoliteracy

They've been doing this for at least a few years now. They set up in the back of the store. A hidden gem.

The tacos at the bodega are a real hidden neighborhood gem and better than most others in the neighborhood. Every time I have had they have had eight so different choices as well as great sides and really great salsas and sauces that taste homemade. Their food is thoughtful and the flavors make you want to eat few and order another. If anyone has watched the taco episode of Netflix's Ugly Delicious, their tacos hit three of the four points of a great taco place laid out early in the episode.

Good to know. Is it a sit down restaurant?

No it's a bodega with a little counter in the back. I think there is a table but it's really a to go situation.

The tacos are great

They changed my whole opinion about "yet another fruit store"
A while back, I went in for milk really late around midnight.
Guys were in back and the aroma of chicken was incredible. I commented on it and was invited to sit with them and have some stewed chicken and tortillas. It was just an offering to a lady who made a nice comment. MMMmmmmm.. Yum!

Also note that I'm pretty sure they serve ceviche on weekends, maybe in summer.
My neighbor said it was the best he ever had. (I don't eat it)

As I recall, the tacos are $3 each. They are nicely stuffed. I bought two and was very full. They are tasty and a bargain! A very nice place overall with real Mexican atmosphere.

Does anyone know if they have vegetarian options? (Dairy OK, but no meat.)

The last time we went they had an awesome option of a taco with a fried poblano pepper stuffed with firmer Mexican cheese. They also regularly stewed cactus for toppings that I am sure they would make into its own taco if you asked.

As far as vegetarian options, their fruit salad and juices are really good!

A critic from eater.com went there recently:

Quote
Chorizo taco at San Antonio Farm & Grocery
From the outside it looks like any combo greengrocer and bodega, with vegetables, meats, and packaged goods prominently displayed. But persevere to the tiny steam table in the rear on any Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, to discover a makeshift taqueria at San Antonio Farm & Grocery. It displays onion-flecked cecina, chicken tinga, and a roast pork pernil that isn’t really Mexican but makes great tacos anyway, and wonderful sliced chorizo, the very best choice. The bright red sausage is made in Corona, Queens, and flavored with fresh jalapeños, which give it added kick. One taco will set you back $3, almost a meal in itself. 85-25 37th Ave., at 86th Street, Jackson Heights — Robert Sietsema, senior critic
