More than Bargains at dollar stores - NYT article
« on: September 13, 2017, 01:16:16 PM »
From The New York Times:

For These Immigrants, Dollar Stores Provide More Than Bargains

"As dollar stores have proliferated across New York City, they have provided not only bargains for shoppers, but also jobs and livelihoods for a new generation of immigrants like the Lins. These immigrants say the dollar stores are a step up from the restaurants and factories that have long sustained the city’s newcomers, but offered grueling schedules that left workers little time to spend with their families. Their dollar stores are often stocked with reminders of their own homelands as well as of their friends’ and neighbor’s, from guava juice and curry pastes to hot peppers and Goya canned beans."

Well, the story does make the point quite clearly that there are so many dollar stores now that they are starting to cannibalize each other.

We're probably at peak dollar store...in another 10 years the competition will have caused a lot of them to close.

I've done my fair share of shopping at the local 99 cent store.  It comes in pretty handy during those last minute moments when I forget to pick something up for a party, for example, or when kids need school supplies.  That said, having two of these businesses competing side by side, as the ones located across from the post office on 37th Avenue is overkill, IMHO.  There's obviously a need for bargain type businesses in Jackson Heights when we have so many, and they're often bustling with customers.  The NYT article paints a different picture, though.  I suppose dollar stores can also fall victim to rising rents and competition from national chain stores.

I think it's more that we have so many dollar stores, not that we hate them.  Well, I'll admit I won't step foot in one; too many counterfeit/toxic plastic products.

All of them sell counterfeit items and items with toxic plastic, even the ones that are national chains.
