Internet Providers
« on: February 05, 2017, 10:53:08 AM »
Hi guys, I am looking to quit Verizon, as their service is terrible.  They have put all their eggs into Fios, except it doesn't pay to wire less then 100% of a building so many areas don't have it - despite from my  understanding their agreement to have NYC wired by 2010.  My friends have Time Warner and that was a disaster as well.  Considering the amounts their CEOs  make we should have better service.  I don't know of any other service here??? This has now caused issues with my class at the New School because many of the tutorials are on line.  HELP!!!!!!!

i've had Time Warner for 14 years, and after previous experiences with Cablevision (outside JH) and Fios, i can say that TWC (Spectrum) is the best i've had -- a C-plus compared to two D-minuses.
I know RCN is out there, but i believe they also require whole-building wiring.

There is already a thread on cable companies in a different section,  so review that thread before switching. You should be able to get good enough Internet from your cell phone provider to view your course work.  You might have to upgrade your service to an unlimited plan,  but if you get rid of your cable or Fios Internet, the extra expense would be offset. You may need to pay extra for tethering or Hotspot access if you have to use a laptop,  but you could also just buy a 4G USB modem for your laptop instead.  Something to consider, anyway.

Our complex of 288 units was wired by Verizon over a year ago.  I have TWC and I'm a very heavy user during the week (stock market).  I'm completely satisfied.  We had an outage in January for 4 hours that I'm convinced was caused by all the construction work being done on 35th & 37th Ave.  Prior to this outage we had one about 5 years ago that lasted about 12 hours.  I have no contact with TWC by telephone since I never have a problem.  As the old saying goes, "if it works, don't fix it."

""In a 2008 agreement with New York City, Verizon committed to extend its FiOS network to every household across the five boroughs by June 30, 2014," said the announcement of an audit released today by the city's Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT)."... Jackson Heights has FIOS in the street. Your building has to allow FIOS to wire your building.

At Washigton Plaza we have the FIOS cable in the basement but the owners will not allow Verizon to wire the building.
