A Green Median on Northern

Borough president Melinda Katz has allocated $300,000 for a green mall on Northern Blvd. http://www.queensbp.org/borough-president-katz-allocates-32-million-to-queens-parks/

This is great news, as it will create a chance to expand on what Daniel Dromm and Julissa Ferreras have already started to do.

Greening of northern means beautification, but more than that. It is a significant step for safety, because it will make the street not look like a highway, discouraging speeding. It will make it more inviting for people outside of a car, potentially fomenting businesses. It will also help bridge the physical barrier between Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst and Corona.

If I were trying to open a shop in Jackson Heights area, there's where I'd try to find a spot...

Another spot on Northern will be opening up soon, too. Where the current Sports Authority is. Will be interesting to see what opens up there. Target? Private-label gym? It's certainly a large space with a parking lot.

Sorry, I wish I could change the title of the thread.  Green mall = A planted median. For example, like the one on 34th ave. I read later that this news is from last August... So maybe it corresponds to the new spots for plants there, that JHBG has been graciously taking care of.

I hope not big box retail with parking.  We're in the middle of a housing crisis.  There should be a 40 story apartment tower of affordable housing on that site.

It's gonna take much more than green median to "beautify" Northern Boulevard.  Still, I guess it's a start.
