Recommend an organization for adoption?
« on: December 01, 2015, 02:26:08 PM »
Hi all,
I'm thinking of adopting a cat (if only I can convince my other half). I've been looking on Petfinder.com and there are so many different organizations in NYC. I'd like to adopt from a reputable organization that can do a good home match--we have two small kids so would need a cat with a rather friendly, dog-like personality. Can anyone recommend an animal rescue/shelter/adoption agency, either here in Queens or elsewhere nearby?

Have you been over to the new PETCO?  There is an adoption group there called Friends with Four Paws. I just started volunteering for them but I don't know a lot about the organization yet.   Maybe consider fostering a cat/kitten with the option to adopt.  This way you can see if it works for you and your family.
Good luck and let me know if I can be of any help.

Also KittyKind at the Petco on 17th St. & Broadway has excellent adoption counselors and they really know their cats' personalities (catalities?).  They won't steer you wrong.

We've adopted 2 very lovable cats over the years from the ASPCA.  You can read some profiles on their website and they have counselors to help you.

It's not exactly local, but North Brooklyn Cats are great. They do a weekly adoption event at Muddy Paws pet store on Graham Ave in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. You can see some of their current cats here:

Animal control.

Poor creatures are being murdered daily for lack of space and adoptions.

Momma cats and babies are bought in at night and their executions are already planned for 600am.

According to training I just took via the ASPCA, Animal Care and Control is trying very hard not to automatically euthanize animals, but is working with different no-kill shelters to get pets moved from ACC to a shelter. Trainers said that ACC will bring momma cats and their newborn kittens to a shelter for the long process of bottle feeding. However, adopting from ACC will still get an animal off of what could be death row if it isn't brought to a shelter.

I also saw Bobbi and the Strays on a TV segment. They're in Ridgewood. I looked them up online and they look very good. I also stopped by to see about volunteering with them but they were closed. From what I saw, the animals were well cared for in their cages, with beds and stuffed toys.

Whatever organization you decide to adopt from, please make sure the animal has had all his/her vaccinations, been dewormed and defleaed.  I think fostering first is the best idea and it works for most rescues too.  ACC's animals sometimes need a little "work" as they are traumatized by being institutionalized.  That said I have a ACC rescue and it can be a very rewarding experience to bring them around if you have the time and patience to do it.

With regard to TNR.  Have you called Neighborhood Cats?  They might be able to put you in touch with an experienced trapper person.  Do you have transportation and a holding space?
Also the last time I attended a seminar at the ASPCA they were asking for people who wanted to assist experienced trappers when they do large colonies.  I have a trap if you need to borrow one.
Jackson Heights has a lot of feral cats who are fed but not spayed or neutered.  Feel free to contact me
