I second the idea of a performance space. I know it's not  large but even expresso 77, which is tiny, has live music. In my fantasy this place would also serve wheatgrass juice and have shelves of free books for trading. I'm not sure how the rent would work out but we could set it up as a cooperative and take turns staffing it. We had a space like this in college which sold health food and housed a zine library.

ps. If anyone sets up a decent way to trade books in the neighborhood, I'm in.

There used to be a very small Dunkin Donuts on 82nd Street.

A forum like this was once a long-held fantasy of mine... and I found it today, so that's one down, and dozens more to go.

I would like to see all of the single-story commercial buildings on Roosevelt Avenue erect solar farms on their rooftops to help us raise our standard of living by lowering energy costs and consumer prices across the neighborhood.

I can do without a Starbucks, as the area is already overrun with Dunkin Donuts and most of the bakeries provide great coffee with their delicious pastries and ethnic breads.

I just don't think the homogenized ideal of Corporate Coffee Culture fits in with a neighborhood as diverse as ours.  We have our own "Pinkberry" knock-off, for heaven's sake!  This neighborhood is too clever for Starbucks.  As far as my dream coffee shop goes, I would prefer one place where I could get a cup brewed in any of the national traditions available across the Heights.

Zion deli in Elmhurst has a salad bar, there for many years, very fresh and does very, very well. Sometimes they have generic sushi plates to go, and homemade soup. If someone had something like this, and kept it up, in the heart of Jackson Heights, it might do well.

I was on my way to Elmhurst today so I stopped by Zion to take a look at the salad bar.  Unfortunately, to my eyes, it looks very much like alot of typical supermarket salad bars, with the lettuce swimming in oil and some other things heavily dressed or with an oily appearance.  I passed by at 2:30pm so perhaps the items look fresher at 11am or so, but still, it certainly does not inspire me to return.

On the other hand, I had what I felt was a beautiful avocado salad at Coatzingo on 82nd St. the other night.  I skipped the dressing entirely and a friend and I combined it with a chicken dish (don't rememember which one) and split both dishes in two.  It was great.

It seems that a decent pet shop is needed .I am still planning out what I'm going to do (since the space is relatively small ) . I was thinking a pet hotel in the basement , with a very nice pet shop on the street level (in no way resembling an of the mediocre pet stores we have ) . Also, carrying holistic pet food and items of the nature (dog and cat accessories ) . Also, offering pet related services such as dog walking and maybe grooming in the future. Being a pet owner myself I am sick of going to Petco in Union Square or Long Island .
Once again thank you all for your insight and let's hope this may become a reality. :)

I wish you every success!

(For the record, as a window shopper but not a pet owner, I always love those doggie day spa places in Manhattan that have big glass windows, and dogs lounging around on sofas inside, watching TV.  They always keep me chuckling for the next few blocks!)

APG, I love the idea of a quality pet supply shop in the neighborhood.  It would be wonderful to have a shop that carries quality pet foods and products and to be able to purchase them right here in Jackson Heights!   I think many people are more conscious these days about how they feed their pets, especially after that tainted pet food scare in 2007.  Your idea of possibly offering grooming and pet walking services would be a definite plus for this type of business.  If you do decide to go ahead with this plan, it would be great to see what products pet owners seek out the most.  I know I'll have my list available!

Best of luck!

I have to applaud this move as well. An upscale pet store is sorely needed in this neighborhood. Jackson Heights is very pet friendly and that was a big reason we moved here, but we have been disappointed with the pet stores in the area. I lug five pound bags of dog food home from work with me every few weeks because I can't find our brand in Jackson Heights. So if your taking suggestions let me know!

If a new pet store does open up, I hope it stocks a lot of pooper-scoopers.

I think we can all agree that some of the cross streets can be veritable minefields.

What's up with that?

Let me just say that not only is a great pet store needed, your idea for a pet hotel is MUCH needed as well! Since moving to Queens, we've been searching for some one close by to board our cocker spaniel, and this would be an excellent resource. Also there was a fairly decent pet store in my old nab, park slope called NYC Pet. They carried some excellent brands of food, like wellness, science diet etc. You might want to check them out to get some ideas.

Wine bar with finger foods like Tapas.  But definitely a wine bar.  See now I have to open a bottle of wine because there is NO wine bar here!!!!

I agree on starting a new thread for anything pet related.  Maybe Todd will group our existing messages together and lump them into a new thread.  Anyway, I have heard about the store in LIC, but have not gone there.  I'd either have to take the bus, train or car to get there.  That's my whole point on wanting a nice shop right here in Jackson Heights.

[As requested, some of the discussion of the existing options for pet stores in the area have been moved to a new thread. --toddg]

I ate there just once but didn't love it.  I know that's not enough to base my opinion but they had live music that was so ear splitting loud that we couldn't even have a conversation out on the sidewalk table.

Am I the only person here who likes Happy Kitchen?  Okay so some of their sushi isn't "raw" but overall the quality is fresh and they have brown rice choices.  Beats not having any sushi place at all to me.  I like the bagel place on 37th and 86th Street.  and I like Arunee Thai.  I'd love a wine bar with cheeses etc.  When I need a "fix" I go into Manhattan to UVA on the Upper Eastside.  Love it.

What i think we need

A Barnes N Nobles
Jamba Juice (as much as people will say oh big chain this and that, i doubt anyone will ever open a jamba juice type of store)
Fish Market
We have the columbian butcher shop but there meat never seems fresh so a new butcher would be nice with better cuts
Cheap sushi - no reason to be paying 4.75 for a california roll at happy kitchen when you can buy it in elmhurst for 2.50 same freshness.

for now one has to resolve to exploring jackson heights and other neighborhoods. not just the 82nd-74th st and 37th ave.
I love controversy geezer's brace yourselves lolol.
