Diversity Plaza Visioning Session

Currently implemented with interim materials, Diversity Plaza is to be redesigned to create a new public space. Since its inception, the Plaza has become the focal point for many Jackson Heights residents, most recently as a meeting place for the Nepalese community in the wake of the earthquake that struck their country.

Please join us to see and comment on proposed plans for an improved plaza!

Time: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Contact: Emily Weidenhof at NYC DOT, 212 839-4325 or eweidenhof@dot.nyc.gov, for all questions, including accessibility accommodations. Please provide as much advance notice as possible to allow us to provide optimal access.

Does anyone have any follow-up/notes regarding this meeting?  I would love to know more about it's future.

I'd be very interested in knowing more about this too. Did it happen at all?

I wasn't able to make it to this event, but I did find online this presentation that was made to the Community Board 3 Transportation Committee last week: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/2015-05-diversity-plaza-cb3.pdf

I think it looks great and will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

One idea that recently occurred to me is the construction of more spaces on 37th Road that could be utilized by additional community-building businesses like say, an ice cream shop, or coffee joint or empanada place, book dealer, etc.
There's that wall space on the southwest edge, just around the corner from Broadway, that perhaps could be built out from... and then there would be opportunity for more shops to open up (and customers could then use the existing outdoor seating to enjoy what they got from the new cafes or eateries, etc)

I'd have brought it up before May 9th if i'd thought of it...

Forgive me, my lack of knowledge, but I started off reading the below article thinking how great the pedestrian improvements are for Julissa's district. I had recently organized a kids bike ride in the mentioned area, and would love to see connectors to our jewel, the Flushing Promenade. I hope you'll all agree, that access to that waterfront, with its nice paths for walking and biking, as well as opportunities to fish, picnic, and even try a dragon boat, are super worthwhile.

But the article ends with the comments on Diversity Plaza. I wasn't able to attend the DOT presentation, and there is little news of it. Does Dromm have any press release or update someone could forward?

In any case, the article states that Sukki NY is against the DOT revisions. Is that true? Do they really request more parking?

There will be a community board meeting in Jackson Heights. DOT will show Diversity Plaza plans to CB3's transportation committee. If you show up and like the plan (PDF above), you can say so. It's important that people who like the plan voice their opinions too.

Traffic & Transportation Committee Meeting
Presentation by DOT regarding the Visioning of Diversity Plaza.

June 9, 2015 7:00 PM
82-11 37th Avenue
Suite 606
Jackson Heights, NY 11372

One more thing you can do, since you like the idea of connecting bike lanes to Flushing Promenade:

Go to transportation alternatives website and sign up the petitions to the cases you support: http://transalt.org/getinvolved/neighborhood/queens

They meet in Jackson Heights every 2nd Tuesday of the month (June 9 as well, this month):
Queens Pride House
76-11 37th Ave, Jackson Heights
6:30 - 8 pm
