I'm baffled by kitchen renovations that end up with very few cabinets but these plain shelves on the wall that hold a few coffee cups or tins of tea. Do you know what the people who opt for that are thinking? Do they not need cabinets?

I'm not sure, but I do think that a very minimally renovated kitchen can be attractive to a buyer who wants to do a renovation to their own tastes.

Maybe Shelby2 is right. When I see a house or apartment for sale that has a wall of kitchen cabinets I hate, I think about the hassle and expense of getting rid of them. If there are no cabinets there to hate, that's not a concern!

Thanks for your response, too, agentarmen. I can see that there are some lower cabinets. I guess I disregarded them because I tend to use my higher cabinets more than my lower ones.

The one featured in Curbed did a nice job opening the kitchen.

The square footage of that apartment is 925. But somehow, opening up the living room and kitchen has made the living room look tiny! Like you sit on the sofa and stare at the kitchen. Yeah, yeah, I know...I watch HGTV. People like to be able to prepare food in the kitchen and talk to their guests at the same time. I get that, but it sure makes the living area look narrow in the photos. Maybe it's better in person.

That apartment in the Monroe highlights the shiny penny trap. Yes, open floor plans are popular. But it's a one bedroom apartment. How much kitchen and counter space do you really need for an apartment that two people - possibly three people as a couple starts a family - will occupy? Even if you eliminate the formal dining space and just plan on using a butterfly table  and folding chairs when you have company over, TV placement in the living room is difficult without the wall that used to be there separating the kitchen and living room.
