This was a surprise since I think usually the On the Market articles usually only focus on Manhattan and Brooklyn.

It IS a handsome apartment :) Times sent their own photographer to shoot it for their article. It's in both digital and print edition.

This is our actual listing: http://www.jacksonheightslistings.com/listings/35-15-84th-street-1b/

and here is anther of ours that got picked up by CURBED two weeks ago:

I'm baffled by kitchen renovations that end up with very few cabinets but these plain shelves on the wall that hold a few coffee cups or tins of tea. Do you know what the people who opt for that are thinking? Do they not need cabinets?

i never understood that, either, in terms of looks or practicality.

then again, when i was in my twenties, i had a bunch of musician friends who essentially treated their entire kitchens as storage. these were older (40 ish) bohemian types who had lived in the same walk ups for 20 years and used the oven to store out of season clothes and such :)

I'm not sure, but I do think that a very minimally renovated kitchen can be attractive to a buyer who wants to do a renovation to their own tastes.

At first glance looks like lack of cabinets , I agree. However in reality there is anabundance of easily accessible cabinet storage below counter level, under the island and on side wall near refrigerator. Therefore wall space around stove is mostly decorative shelving. Not to everyone’s taste of course .

Maybe Shelby2 is right. When I see a house or apartment for sale that has a wall of kitchen cabinets I hate, I think about the hassle and expense of getting rid of them. If there are no cabinets there to hate, that's not a concern!

Thanks for your response, too, agentarmen. I can see that there are some lower cabinets. I guess I disregarded them because I tend to use my higher cabinets more than my lower ones.

It's so great to see our neighborhood featured. That first apartment is a very large one-bedroom! I like the listing photos better than the ones in the Times, actually. Though, I think the seller should consider removing some living room furniture, like the computer desk.

The one featured in Curbed did a nice job opening the kitchen.

Thanks for sharing these.

The square footage of that apartment is 925. But somehow, opening up the living room and kitchen has made the living room look tiny! Like you sit on the sofa and stare at the kitchen. Yeah, yeah, I know...I watch HGTV. People like to be able to prepare food in the kitchen and talk to their guests at the same time. I get that, but it sure makes the living area look narrow in the photos. Maybe it's better in person.

I agree.  Open floor plans only work if you've got a really big space.  And.....where would the television go?  I guess it would have to be in the bedroom.

That apartment in the Monroe highlights the shiny penny trap. Yes, open floor plans are popular. But it's a one bedroom apartment. How much kitchen and counter space do you really need for an apartment that two people - possibly three people as a couple starts a family - will occupy? Even if you eliminate the formal dining space and just plan on using a butterfly table  and folding chairs when you have company over, TV placement in the living room is difficult without the wall that used to be there separating the kitchen and living room.

Right, and not just TV placement. I have pieces of furniture that work best up against a wall (like bookcases). When I was looking for an apartment, I passed on a number of places because there wasn't enough usable wall space.
