On the gay circuit the Betsy Ross reincarnated as the Magic Touch on 37th Rd along side the Eagle theater and was there until the late 90's or early 00's.  Also, along Roosevelt there was Billy the Kid (there was always a pool game to be had there) which was open till the late 90's.  About the only one still open from that time would be Friends.  I'm sure there were more.  Can anyone fill in the blanks?

Before it was the Mgic Touch it was the Betsy Ross, before the Betsy Ross it used to be a pretty good restaurant called the Adirondack...

Back in the mid-50s, I used to live at 30-01 83rd or as my Bklyn buddies called it, toity-oh-wun-aiddy-toid.
Three of us lived in a cellar apartment of a nice Hungarian lady who kept us alive at times by giving us a big pan of goulash.
We worked as air traffic controllers at NY Center then at Hangar 11, Idlewild......6 days a week, 8+ hrs a day for about $85 bucks.
There was a bar at Northern and 89th called, I think, Club 89.  Big guy named Tony ran it and he, too, kept us fed with a twice a week freebies of lasagna or some other pasta.
What's there now?

Was the Dumbarton next to the Earl Theater?  I remember going to a restaurant called the Adirondeck Lodge next to the theater in the 1950s.  It was owned by a local politician, Johnny Cronin.

yes, Dumbarton was next to the Earl where Kabab King is now. I couldn't tell you about the Adirondak as that's a little before my time.

Does anyone remember Crossroads. It was located where Delhi Heights Restaurant is now.  There was also a bar on 74th Street just off Broadway, although I don't remember the name.  A very long time ago there was an Irish bar on 74 Street in the building next to TD bank.
Legends still remains on 35th between 72 and 71 Street.

If memory serves and my spelling is correct I believe it was called Davitt and McDonough. I really should remember since the house I grew up in was two houses down from it.  ???

Don't forget Maxl's on 74th Street near 37th avenue.  Learned to drink there at .15 per draft beer.  Even though we were just out of high school, a grand old bartender named Fred always made us feel welcome. Anyone remember the place?

You are correct.  Most people just referred to it as Davitt's.  I believe it later became "Montana"  which was primarily a straight bar during the day and primarily a gay bar at night.

Did Maxi's later become Shoot the Breeze or were they two separate bars?  Shoot the Breeze was open in the 1980's on the western side of 74th street closer to 37th avenue than to Roosevelt.

The Blue Haven was located at the corner of 73rd Street and 37th Avenue. Lenny Bruce was there in 1947 when he was just starting out.  The nightclub had a blue mirrored facade and a big circular bar, as did Dumbarton Oaks.  Attached is a picture of the old place.  And speaking of bars, who remembers The Orchid on 37th Avenue between 76th and 77th streets?
