The LaGuardia AirTrain will not travel along the Grand Central Parkway, after East Elmhurst residents opposed the placement of the rail on the road, two state elected officials said last week.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and Gov. Cuomo’s office are now working on a new route that would see the planned tracks — which would connect the airport with the No. 7 subway and Long Island Rail Road at Willets Point — placed over the Flushing Bay Promenade, or directly above the water.

“That was proposed and it appears the Port Authority and the Governor’s Office are accepting that as a condition to get legislation passed,” Assemblyman Jeff Aubry (D-Corona) told members of Community Board 3 last Thursday.

A Cuomo spokesman referred all inquiries to the Port Authority, a spokesman for which said in an emailed statement, “As we continue the planning stage, it’s critical that we do so with full community input. We have conducted several meetings with elected officials and community representatives to gather input regarding the Airtrain’s potential routes in advance of a formal environmental review. Any proposed route cannot be finalized until the environmental review is completed.”

Aubry and state Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) will eventually introduce a bill that will delineate the path of the train.

They to be going full steam for it.  Very little public opposition at Willets Point. Nobody lives there yet. They are spending the PA’s money so who cares attitude.

Reminds me of another great proposal.

Oh, I would absolutely LOVE a monorail!

So... I love how most of Queens waterfront is worth absolutely nothing to politicians. Meanwhile it's become the most prized parts in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Why are we shitting on our water here?

 Jeff,
I could not agree more!! That area opposite CItifield should be a showpiece of a waterfront experience in Queens. Cities
all over the country are doing that. What we have now is a rag tag mix of trash, party boats, leftover (but great) Worlds
Fair structures and lot's of odd parking that services the Mets games and drivers who need a break. I'm sure that am missing
a few things BUT why not a good fish restaurant? Great seating, better biking. Some of those optical things like in Lower
Manhattan for watching the skies. Just make it clean and interesting but you would not have to spend a fortune as it's
already a great spot. Visit the West Side of Manhattan from the 50's down for ideas...

Is there a public website for this important civic project? One that reviews the options?

What about the 7 train's 69th Street/Fisk station as an option, via the BQE. Where is the Port Authority's analysis of this option?

It truly is horrible that NYC doesn't try to make plans for improving the north Queens waterfront.  It certainly has the potential for bringing in more tourists and raise property values (which then benefits the city in property tax revenues collected.)  It's a win-win.  Of course, more should be done in improving mass transit in the area...I'd personally love to see a monorail scooting above traffic and helping to reduce the amount of pollution put out by vehicles (and reduce automobile traffic as well).  It's a worthwhile dream....

Totally agree.

I have walked along that promenade... and it has a lot of potential that would be totally ruined by adding a train alongside it...

Agreeing again. What a terrible way to ruin the waterfront. The Flushing Promenade is really beautiful (I love running and biking on it), and it could be even more so if anything at all were invested in some improvements and basic maintenance and upkeep. Running the airtrain on top of it is truly the kind of neglect of public spaces that seems to only happen in the outer boroughs.

Right, the Flushing Bay Promenade is wonderful. I've run along it 100s of times. And you're right, it could use a little more loving.

I'd like to suggest that that loving be built around a name change to Beckles Bay. ("Commodore" Pat Beckles was a longtime member of Community Board 3 and chair of its waterfront committee. Pat's focus turned to the Bay during the Jimmy Carter Administration (maybe it was Richard Nixon) and didn't end until his demise last year.

Such a name change offers several advantages: it differentiates / separates the Promenade from Flushing Bay; its a cause to rally around and organize support for "Beckles Bay;" and it honors an exemplary neighbor.

Here's one voice for Beckles Bay.

How do you get to the Promenade on foot (after Willets Point - is 111th Street better?) I've walked to the lake but always seem to draw a blank, and the maps confuse me. It all looks like major highways!

Nicest way to walk to Beckles Promenade is via path at 27th Avenue and Ditmars Blvd. See the pathway over Grand Central here: https://screenshots.firefox.com/LvD1pD1ck45I30CL/www.google.com

it is a cool walk. always enjoyed exploring the waterfront over there since it is relatively peaceful (other than traversing the GCP)

I have walked from Willets Point stop, straight up. It would be great to do a cleanup there. Also, isn't it a superfund site? It's on my list of things to do to ask Koo's office about this? Wouldn't it be amazingly reprehensible if they cancelled the superfund bc of the airtrain?
