Am I missing something because I didn't see where PR56 indicated that he/she doesn't live in Jackson Heights?

i was mistaken in stating that as a fact -- it's a guess.

the tone has been such that i presumed that  -- like with long gone posters such as "colombia," who bashed the neighborhood roundly, then admitted he or she did not live here.

may i ask why someone who doesn't live in the community, and clearly dislikes it, expends such energy writing about that in a forum devoted to it?

I often ask the same question. I suppose I have the same general question about much of the internet.

Well I remember being accused of being a real estate agent and worse once because of some comments I made about wanting more variety of restaurants in the neighborhood. I see some people on this site accusing people who might have a criticism as being trolls, and intentionally or not it has a freezing effect on the Board.  Of course as long as you don't break the board rules it's your right, but it's not always respectful.  I was pretty hurt by my experience, and I feel it was very very unfair.

Back to the topic!

When I was buying a coop in Jackson Heights as couple of years ago, it was not an easy choice. The price of 2bedroom 2bath apartments near the express subway was not that affordable, the price at that time was almost the same as Forest Hills. The walking to/from express subway station was very unpleasant, especially the bad smell in the summer .

Anyway, if not in Jackson Heights, I probably would live in Forest Hills. While I lived in Forest Hills for a year and liked it much better than Jackson Heights for everything else except the commute, I ended up living in Jackson Heights due to the shorter commute.  I probably have placed too much priority on the commute.

I think it's only 9 minutes between Forest Hills and Jackson Heights on the E train.  However, I guess if the train gets delayed somewhere in between those stations, then it could make it much longer.

I thought the price of coops in these two neighborhoods was still pretty much the same?

I spent many many years looking in JH. I ended up right on the border of Woodside/Sunnyside. Love it here, quick commute to Manhattan, lots of bars, restaurants, shopping, etc.

I used to love living in LIC, but it's lost much of its appeal for me.

Rhyde, Sunnyside is a natural attractant for the artists being forced out of LIC. I like White Cake Bakery Cafe on 43rd, Parrot--a European market, and you can find me at Claret's flamenco night on the last Saturday of the month. I study at Kim's Ballet in Woodside, too.

I could live in your area, but JH is still preferable to me because it's so beautiful.

You are correct, of course. It happens to the best of us ;=)

I think it's only 9 minutes between Forest Hills and Jackson Heights on the E train.  However, I guess if the train gets delayed somewhere in between those stations, then it could make it much longer.

The thing is that I work in the upper east side. I take E or R in the morning at Jackson Heights, and in the evening, after the downtown 6 train, at 59th/Lexington I will take R or N/Q+7 or N/Q+E/R/M (involves walking between Queens Boro Plaza and Queens Plaza). This sounds like crazy calculus, and I know a lot of people are doing whatever to shorter the commute time.  Jackson Heights gives me a lot of options so that I do not have to worry about the train delays for any particular line.

I hate the train delays or waiting at the platform forever for the train that takes forever to show up.  This is very important for me to pick up the kids on time in the evening. The day care and my kids would be very upset when I get there too late.

My wife is working near the Grand Central, so she just takes 7 train from Jackson Heights directly to her work.

In Jackson Heights at the express stop, we have too many train options and we don't have to rely on the E train.

I'd live in sunnyside if it had the train access we do.

I guess if I could afford a place in the old/fancy part of Forest Hills, there are some nice buildings there. But when we looked there, we felt more like we were on Long Island and less that we lived in the city. JH was much more of an urban neighborhood feel to us.

True, Sunnyside only has one train, but at least it is the BEST train in NYC.

And when there are massive delays, you always have the option of two buses (Q32 and Q60) running along on Queens Blvd to get you into Manhattan.

If there were massive delays, your only option is to talk from Sunnyside to Queens Plaza (or Queens Boro Plaza). These buses would be already full packed and there is a also a long line at the bus stop. I always hated the morning commute when I lived in Sunnyside.  Even with minor delays, after I patiently waited at the platform for more than 15 minutes with no train to show up, and then a full packed train would skip the stop, and I can not get in the second train, finally I can get in at the third train.

This is true. I'd guesstimate it happens around once every 200 working days.
Another option is to walk to Northern Blvd and catch the R train.
