I went to a place around the corner from spicy mina, hyberdarabi - something liket that. it was really good! I walked in spicy mina and walked out. something turned me off. ill have to try it, but you have to try hyberdarabi(?)

Wow Jeff!  Spicy Mina is really popular with the folks over at Chowhound, although like Todd mentioned earlier, people have questioned the consistency (food is phenomenal one day....not so good the next).  That said, I think her fans may outnumber the naysayers.

How was the food at Hyderabad?  Did you guys sit outside?  I noticed that they have a few tables set up in front of the restaurant.

Never mind Jeff.  I just realized that you were responding to Todd's Spicy Mina post.  Am still interested in knowing about the food at Hyderabad though!

So guess who was waiting outside Delhi Palace at 1pm today??? elyaqim!  Hurray.  He recovered and realized that the best thing for an upset stomach, was in fact Indian food.  jeffsayyes came right after.

The three of us walked in and the place was empty.  I can understand why elyaqim didn't think they had a lunch buffet cuz it was no where to be seen.  But it was there ALL THE WAY IN THE BACK CORNER.  It was tiny.  And didn't have a great selection.  So I was forced to eat dishes I might not ordinarily try out of possible hunger from lack of choices.

So here's the skinny: food: so-so.  I'm amazed that people think this place has better food than Jackson Diner.  OMG, no way.  Not only is the Jackson Diner lunch buffet twice the size, it has better tasting food AND because of the large numbers of people eating at Jackson Diner, their buffet is constantly being replenished.  Delhi Palace, being empty, might have had their food sitting in those trays since 11am!!!!

There were two dishes I did like at Delhi Palace: a cauliflower/spinach spicy one and some vegetable dish that you put on toasted, crusty bread like a dinner roll, not nan.  Odd but tasty.

There was nothing odd about the company.  Great guys.  Enjoyable conversation.  I'm looking forward to the next get together.

I'm surprised and disappointed by your experience at Delhi Palace.  When I've been there (always on weekends, most recently over a year ago), I have found the buffet to have at least as many options as Jackson Diner, and the food generally comparable (with better vegetarian selections).

But it's been a while, and it's entirely possible that the quality of their buffet has declined (although I know the restaurant remains excellent for take-out and delivery, since this is where I usually order from).  Or it may just be a matter of an insufficient crowd on weekdays.  More research needed!   ;)

I'm surprised too. Delhi Palace has always been good - not superlative, but good, tasty food and the vegetarian options and biryani have always been better and more interesting than at Jackson Diner (they even served some kind of mushroom saag once!). I've not tried the buffet at Jackson Diner but I've ordered off the menu, and the bhindi masala was an oily, gloppy mess and the saag paneer very bland and average. Wasn't too impressed. Maybe I have to go back and try the JD buffet (which, I must say, isn't all that much more crowded than DP on a weekday lunch), however I do feel that JD has been dumbed down a lot.

This weekend I had a really good lunch buffet at Nanking Express. It's only available on weekends from about 12.30 to 4pm. It's a mix of your usual Indian buffet standards (butter chicken, rogan josh, etc) and some Indian-Chinese dishes such as the chilli chicken. They also have some interesting dishes on the buffet line - kurkuri bhindi (crispy okra, almost like french fries!), eggplant, Manchurian chicken, etc. And best of all, mango lassi and a choice of dessert (you pick) are included in the buffet price! I had a really good gajar halwa but you can also choose to have mango or rose ice cream and gulab jamum...

In other news, "Tandoori Palace" appears to have been replaced by its more permanent facade - can't remember the name, sounds like Tadakil Kitchen or something - but it virtually went up overnight!

Delhi Palace has always been good to me. We've only had he buffet once though, and I have to agree with Buddy. There was not much choice of things I would normally eat. We order take-out/delivery from them alot though and we've never been disappointed. Perhaps the moral is to not get their buffet, but order off the menu.

Jackson Diner just really turns me off. It's over priced, the staff is rude and the service isn't that great.

How funny.  I've never had a bad experience at jackson diner.  waiters are always nice.  service is fast.  food is always fresh.  I've eaten at their buffet for more than a decade.  And at dinner, I've ordered their tandoori prawns YUM.

Thank god there's enough restaurants to make us all happy here.  This weekend we ordered from Nanking for delivery.  The delivery guy screwed it up by not being able to find us (we were two blocks away) but the food was good when it did arrive and not expensive.  They're a bit more "saucy" than I like but their ginger chicken is tasty and I like their spring rolls.  Not loving their rice dish that's spicy but overall it's a nice change from the Chinese take out.

New Indian Restaurant

I walked into the new Indian restaurant today. That nice looking one on the corner. I forgot its name.

They opened Sunday.
It is really nice in there. great touches, not over the top, but  still really well done.

the menu is indian and indian chinese. it is very big. there are a ton of options, theres even a "snack" section in the menu. The prices are regular indian manhattan prices (11-20), which is totally fair for what they seem to offer.

I was very impressed. Seems refined, clean, and like they care. The plates were very modern. yeah, modern. its a modern Indian dining experience. I think they will do very well if the food even comes close to everythign else.

Now I just need a reason to go.

It’s called Delhi Heights, and it was mentioned in another thread. I want to try it too.

"Hunter-Gatherer" ventures out of Manhattan for a Jackson Heights Biryani Odyssey.  Vows to return for more.
