Great Argentinian Food

So...  You've been looking for a place that has good Argentinian grilled meats - well we have one in Jackson Heights!   Kind of hidden, but those in the know seek it out and come from Manhattan to chow down.  It's called La Fusta

It's at 80-32 Baxter Avenue, right across the street from Elmhurst Hospital.   Order the Parrillada which is an assortment of grilled meats and you won't go wrong.  Order for one and it will be enough for two.   Top it off with a south american desert like flan with dulce de leche.

Jackson Heights has food from all over the world - but if you want to sample Argentina - check this place out.  It's about 3 blocks from the 82nd Street stop on the 7 train and if you have friends coming over they can also get there via the R or V train at the Elmhurst Ave stop as well.

Enjoy!  ;)

A Colombian friend of mine who lives in Elmhurst also suggested this restaurant to me.  Haven't tried it yet but it sounds great.  My friend says they also have nice salads for those who aren't huge meat eaters!

Think I will try it soon. . .

So I finally got to try La Fusta and . . .what a great find!  It's got such a cozy atmosphere; the lighting and the feel of the room is just right.  Sangria was delicious and the avocado salad was made with watercress instead of the iceburg lettuce you find in many places.  Skirt steak was tender.  I loved this place!  Can't believe I didn't try it sooner.

My particular favorite steakhouse is La Cabana on Northern Blvd. and 86th Street.  They also make brick oven pizza.  Their "La Cabana" pie has slices of tender skirt steak and goat cheese...delicious!  We usually have the pizza and a small house salad that consists of watercress, iceberg lettuce, hard boiled egg, radishes and vinaigrette dressing for approx. $20.  The Entrana (grilled skirt steak) is huge and easily serves 2 to 3 people, and is to die for!  The ambiance is nice as well.  I also recommend the empanadas with a bit of chimichurri.  Yum!  By the way, they also serve a few Italian dishes, but I go for the steak!

My wife and I made a rare trek out with the tykes to a restaurant tonight.  We chose La Fusta for a family pre-Valentines Day dinner.

Everything was wonderful.  The service was very accommodating of our two small children.   The food was delicious and the portions very generous.  I definitely recommend it.

My only quibble was that the chimichurri sauce wasn't all that exciting.  I'm no expert - I've only eaten at a couple of Argentinian restaurants - but I seem to remember the chimichurri at La Porteña having a bit more kick.

So my friend and I were in the mood for steak tonight and decided to check out this place for two reasons: you're kind words AND it's one block from my building.  (you'd think I would have gone there by now!!! But no, I always end up at either Outback in Bayside shopping center or La Boina Roja on 37th Ave.)

LOVE IT!!!!  We had a strip steak and hanger steak.  Both great.  Huge portions.  We had the two diff. broccolis: steamed and sauteed.  Yum.  And the avocado salad.  I wolfed it down with the bread that tasted like bisquits.  I phoned my other steak loving friend in my building and told him about it.

Chuckster - good job!!!!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it Buddy.  This is my favorite neighborhood steakhouse.  I prefer it to La Fusta, where I've found the steaks a bit on the salty side and La Portena, where they have overcooked them on occasion.  I also like La Cabana's ambiance a bit more.

Tonight, we decided to have our Valentine dinner at Cafe La Nueva.  This place is nothing fancy, but they serve good food at nice prices.  We're pretty much regulars there, so I was surprised when I was provided with bottled water rather than a glassful when I requested water.  In a different circumstance, I would have complained, but seeing that the place was hopping, I decided to let it go.  I have no problems with bottled water.  I just don't enjoy being served something I didn't ask for and then have to pay for it!

It's been a while since we stopped by the Outback at Bay Terrace.  I love that little mall!  There was a time when we would hang out at the Barnes & Noble every weekend and just browse through all the books.  I was always in the cookbook section, and hubby in the sports section.

We stopped by La Cabana in the afternoon very recently and tried to order the pizza that everyone raves about.  Well, apparently pizza's a night-time only food since during the daytime the ovens are busy baking bread.

Anyway, we scanned the menu and came across "grilled offal" which is a pretty rare event.  We ordered it.

Fucking.  Outstanding.

I've tried the offal at a couple of places such as this Spanish restaurant in Astoria (I forget the name) as well as at the very schizophrenic ssam bar.  The offal at La Cabana was the best I've had to date.

(If you don't know what offal is, you might want to wait until after you've tasted it to look it up.)

I returned to La Cabana tonight after not eating here for well over a year.  I had no reason for staying away so long except for all the choices in JH and Astoria. As always I was not disappointed.  We had a skirt steak (entrana) and a chicken cardinale which is chicken with mozzarella cheese,  ham and red peppers.  For side dishes we had Russian potato salad and sauteed broccoli.  Everyting was excellent and the atmosphere is always pleasant.  A surprisewas  when I received the bill and there was a 20% discount on the food. They have  a special menu from Monday to Thursday but we did not order from it so I not expecting a discount.  The waiter told me that if you do not order from the special menu you receive a 20% discount off food items on the regular menu from Monday thru Thursday nights. That's a good deal!  Next time I go I am going to try their pizza which I have never had.
