JHBG and the New York Restoration Project are offering free trees as part of NYC’s Million Trees program.
We are giving away our first 100 free trees of the season on Saturday March 1,at JH Scraps, JHBG’s community composting center at the southwest corner of 35th Avenue and 69th Street. Tree must be planted in NYC. More details and links are below from the New York Restoration Project.

Len Maniace,
President Jackson Heights Beautification Group

Available trees include Carolina silverbells, Japanese tree lilacs, dogwoods and native yellowwoods. Sign up online at http://treegiveaways.com/jhbg to reserve the tree you want, or show up from 11:00am and 1:00pm on March 1st. At least 5 trees of each species will be available first come, first served. Online registration will close at 12pm on Thursday, February 27th.

Please note that trees cannot be planted as street trees, on rooftops or terraces. All trees must be planted in the ground within the 5 boroughs on property you have permission to plant on. Tree planting and care instructions come with your tree. All you need is a place to plant, a shovel and access to water.

Such a great program. Does anyone need help with planting? Probably could be arranged if you have the spot.

I love having trees and have had several planted in front of my home, but be warned.  The city does an awful, if not neglectful  job at pruning them. If you have any green grass or plantings/flowers in front of your home or building, it will kill it because the trees block out the sun light.  Also, because of lack of pruning, the trees block the street lights at night, creating a dark, unsafe feeling.

I like the trees, it's one of quite a few reasons we moved here. Sadly we lost the tree that was outside our apt to disease, it's just not the same without it.
