Where do you exercise/socialize your dog?
« on: November 27, 2007, 10:14:07 AM »
My wife and I are new to the area and are curious if there are any local places where dog owners go for their pups to socialize . We have been driving to McGolrick park in Greenpoint, which is nicely maintained if you don't mind the occasional drunk passed out on a park bench. Given how dog friendly Jackson Heights is I am really hoping there is close by.

Unfortunately, it seems that Jackson Heights doesn't have any place for dogs to socialize yet.  What some folks opt to do is gather at Travers Park in the evenings (cemented areas) with their dogs.  There have been issues in the past due to parents complaining of unleashed dogs in the children's areas during the summer months, but most dog owners go later in the evenings when there are no children in the playground.  Cleanup issues have also arisen in the past.

I remember reading not too long ago about there being a dog walk down 35th Ave., near the 70th/69th Street ramp that leads onto the highway.  Anyone have info on that?

I, too am interested in this. Apparently Travers Park is dog friendly after 9pm and before 9am.

Other than that we haven't found any place local. There is supposed to be a dog run opening nearby, but I have yet to hear of a consistent location for this, other than somewhere near the BQE.

I'm a dog owner as well and I would love to see a dog run in the neighborhood. Can we petition to have a dedicated area created in Travers Park? Are there other places in the Neighborhood that would work as a dog run? It seems with so many pet owners we would be able to make something happen.

NYC Law: dogs may run off-leash in any NYC park between the hours of 9:00 PM–9:00 AM. But, please carry the leash and collar with you at all times, and be sure your dog knows how to "come" and "stop" before turning them loose in the park and don't allow your dog to approach another dog who is leashed. And please, pick up after your dog.

I found this link with some listings of dog parks in the boroughs.  There are two listed in Queens: one near Astoria Park and one over in Long Island City.  I'd like to think there are more but I don't know yet being a new dog owner.  Hopefully this Spring I'll find some.  Not really thinking about that yet... especially on a day like today!

I think there is a dog run in the east part of Woodside, on Queens Boulevard near the BQE.
Also, there is a plan to build a dog run in Torsney park in Sunnyside. The site is very similar to Travers Park in Jackson Heights. It consists of basketball courts and a playground and is about the same size.
All we have to do is put together a proposal for the community board and all show up to the CB meetings to support the idea.

Also it would be a good idea to form an organization like SUDS to promote dogs and cleaning up after them and so on. I propose that the name of such an org should be "Jackson Hounds"!

Love the name "Jackson Hounds".  Don't know what SUDS is.   Will look it up online.

DOG RUN:  I can think of a great place that isn't far to walk to that is ideal.  Other side of Northern Blvd. near Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Huge vacant block of grass that guys used to play soccer on.  Years ago the Community put these large rocks throughout the grass to stop them.  It's on 25th Avenue between 78th and 79th if I remember. I think it would be a perfect place for a dog run.

The rocks haven't stopped anyone from playing in that area, as I go by there frequently and see people, mostly teens playing catch, football, etc.

True, when the weather's warm I still see young guys playing soccer.  But don't you think it'd be a perfect place for dog run?

BTW, my friends over in Bayside told me to check out the dog run that's under the Throggs Neck Bridge along the water off the Cross Island.  Has anyone else been there?  Brilliant dog run and huge, gorgeous grassy area over looking water.  Simply fabulous.

theres a really small area that fenced up in woodside. its on 34 avenue and 60th i think. its around there you cant miss it if you walk through there. i'm not sure if its an official dog park or not but my friends and i call it the dog park. they have bowls of water for dogs around there as well as some plastic chairs where people can just sit around while their dogs run around. check it out!

There is also a huge push (and funding now too) to get a dog run in sunnyside - at skillman and 44th or so (that park where the farmers market is on saturdays).  I don't think there has been a ground-breaking yet, but I know for a fact it's in the works.

Thanks, Greentea.  I'd check it out it's so close by when it's up and running.... pun intended.  :)

And Ando., I live on 34th and always drive down the Avenue towards Broadway and never saw dogs in that green you're talking about.  Maybe I'm driving tooo fast.

I found this site that lists all the parks with off leash policies and all the dog runs in Queens.  Scroll down the page and you'll find the list:

I drove slowly and saw it.  There were a few dogs and people inside.  I wonder who set it up since it's obviously not City run.  It looked like it might be just for the people who live on that block?  I couldn't tell.   Next walk, I'll head over and suss it out.

According to Urban Hound, there's a small dog run located in Woodside at Doughboy Plaza.  The site states that the run is so clean, that it's even questionable if any dogs are actually using it.
