Restaurants & Food / Burmese Bites
« on: December 08, 2021, 12:49:53 PM »

Hat tip to Chopsticks and Marrow
http://chopsticksandmarrow.com/2021/11/burmese-bites-comes-to-queens-center-mall/

Burmese place in Queens Centre Mall food court.

Their tea-leaf salad is good…but their version  of  “Shan Kaukswe”,
a kind of Noodle salad with Chicken/Greens/Peanuts/Spices (dry not soup) is EXCELLENT.

Incredibly aromatic and flavorful, almost minty like some other burmese dishes.
Again, like the tea-leaf salad, such a a wonderful melange of flavors and textures.

They are worth a visit for takeout!

Neighborhood Chat / Replacements for JHL after it's goan.
« on: November 21, 2021, 01:47:52 PM »
That should read "gone", not "goan" which would be delicious if JHlife was turned into a coconut curry. Alas....

I loathe facebook. Nextdoor seems scummy.

I recommend the somewhat moribund - for NOW - r/jacksonheights on reddit.

Restaurants & Food / Lamoon Thai is closing

Lamoon Thai is closing

This is one of the most remarkable restaurants I’ve ever eaten at, and I include Michelin starred places in that list. Easily the equal - or better - of Ayada (or Sripraphi back in the old days), the owners are super friendly and kind, the food is spectacular and so culinarily creative.

They close on Aug 31.

 Last chance to see, people.

Send them some love or better yet, some takeout orders to send them off.

Neighborhood Chat / Optometrist recommendation?
« on: March 24, 2021, 04:53:50 PM »
Anyone recommend an optometrist? Would like someone who actually spends time doing an eye test and isn't in a rush (or trying to hawk me their overpriced glasses).

I went to NY vision center on 77 by Roosevelt a couple of years ago, and while they were nice people doing good work, they had a huge line of people waiting, I felt rushed, and the tests were rudimentary (e.g. no tonometry, not microscopic examination of the eye)  for someone who was a new patient - I don't think they got my baseline at all for a middle-aged person with long-term vision problems.

Don't care about buying glasses (I buy online).  Happy to pay for a better suite of tests and a prescription.

e.g. the optometrist  should have access to most of these tools....

For those of you voting (either by mail, early or in person): If you want meaningful democracy to exist in NY state politics, vote Biden/Harris for prez, but on the working family party  line.

The votes tally for Biden/Harris as normal, but Cuomo doesn’t get to destroy one of the few progressive voices that have dragged the state party to the left.

See details here

Chuck Schumer and AOC endorse this action!

Can someone recommend  a good local appliance (fridge) repair service?

Our fridge is malfunctioning; won’t get much below 55°F even on the 2nd coldest setting..... and it’s out of warranty. We’ve turned it on and off again, made sure the doors seal, cleaned the coils & fan at the rear, and the freezer works well….ie. the compressor works well…..

We think it’s either the board, the defrost system, thermistor/thermostat, evap fan motor, damper control assembly etc.  etc. I can't examine all of these, and  want someone skilled diagnose the actual problem & repair it   instead of me poking around and breaking it (more).

We want someone trustworthy with good recommendations…and   local because we’re gonna have to have 2 visits and ideally we don’t want the person to have to travel far (=$$).One visit to diagnose, then order parts and one to install the fix.

(FWIW: A fridge that won’t go below 55°F isn’t very hygienic for long term storage of food=food poisoning/spoilage!  We will have ourselves masked AND distanced from the repair person for as long as possible, with a window open in the kitchen and a fan blowing air out…)

Restaurants & Food / Nepali Bhancha Ghar Closed?
« on: February 08, 2020, 10:57:20 AM »

Nepali Bhancha Ghar is........closed? This was the nepalese cafe place on 37 rd opposite the new phayul place…. it has a for rent sign in the window.

This had some of the best chicken momos in the area IMHO subtle and deliciously seasoned. Anyone know why they closed….. or what will replace it?

some previous press.....sigh.

Restaurants & Food / Izakaya fuku/sweetory?
« on: November 09, 2019, 02:32:32 PM »
I think this opened a couple of months ago;

https://www.yelp.com/biz/izakaya-fuku-jackson-heights

with a desert place downstairs

https://www.yelp.com/biz/sweetory-queens-2

this would appear to be a good replacement for the sadly departed Zabb Sake Bar; it's in the same building and the desert place uses the same space as Zabb....(perhaps it's the same people?)

Anyone with experience of either care to comment?

Since everyone here talks about small businesses, let's get this warning far and wide.

What follows is a warning about "merchant cash advances" to businesses that skirt lending laws and put any businesses' assets up for immediate, unjustified, un-appealable seizing.

The 3-part article in bloomberg lays it all out.

The robbery is courtesy of archaic, gamed NY laws, but can affect any business whose bank has a branch in NY state..

The series is entitled: Sign here to lose everything

The takehome: NEVER sign a "confession of judgment" when "borrowing" money. EVER. If you do, all your assets can be taken from you, without appeal.

Does anyone know of - and ideally have positive experience with -  a Reliable JH wash & fold laundry service, preferably with pickup & delivery to the 70's?

If no pickup & delivery, must be in low 80s or high 70s.....

Neighborhood Chat / Con ed scammers back in JH
« on: February 15, 2017, 02:05:51 PM »
From the JH Families newsgroup:

Hey Neighbors-

Just thought I'd let you know, these guys were in my building and knocked on my door this evening asking to see my ConEd bill and flashing some unremarkable IDs (had no ConEd uniform or logo anywhere) carrying an Ipad asking me to verify which apartment I was, were very pushy, although trying to be nice, but it all felt very strange to me. But I tend to be pretty trusting. Then I saw this and it made instant sense... Its a scam! Be aware and stay safe, neighbors!

Neighborhood Chat / Protest at corner of 37/78 this afternoon
« on: October 02, 2016, 04:20:46 PM »

There is a protest and counter-protest on the corner of 37th and 78th. It is  to do with  the Columbian referendum on a peace deal with FARC, ending a 52-year civil war.

I saw shutters down on the "Pizza Boy" joint on the corner of 74th st/37 ave, and workers doing serious interior modifications. I don't know whether they are gutting it but it looks pretty drastic.

Does anyone know if they are doing renovation or .....something else?
