this isn't exactly breaking news, but what was once one of the nicer South Asian restaurants in the neighborhood has morphed into a steam table joint -- one with no posted menu, no less. a far smaller selection than either Raja or Maharaja, but there are meat options.

Restaurants & Food / new restaurant at Roosevelt/75th
« on: July 23, 2021, 02:26:26 PM »
there's signage up outside the old medical supply store at Roosevelt and 75th, and it's going to be a restaurant called Gury's (or maybe Gary's -- it's written in script). looks like it could be nice and it's definitely quite large. they've installed porthole windows and replaced or cleaned the brickwork. could be close to opening.

Restaurants & Food / Mango Rico @ 76th Street

The former GNC on 37th and 76th is going to be a location of Mango Rico, the produce stand from further up the avenue. not sure if it's a move or a branch, but the place is REALLY good and i welcome having it closer to home.

Two dudes going door-to-door. don't know how they got into our building, but rang the doorbell (not the intercom) and knocked...."oh, no, no, we're not trying to switch you. just wanted you to know that a lot of your neighbors have been complaining about rates going up and...."

{door slam}

Neighborhood Chat / Neighborhood Spirit
« on: June 17, 2020, 07:06:29 PM »
Last night at seven PM, our neighborhood trumpet player started his pandemic playlist, as he's done every night since the celebration/thank you thing has been going on. for the first time, a hate-filled person started yelling at him to stop because "i want peace and quiet."

the horn dude let him go on for a bit, waited for a pause, and started a chorus of "Hit the Road Jack," which the outside crowd picked up.  Jack tried to scream for a minute, then hit the road.

solidarity!

Neighborhood Chat / Foodtown discount policy
« on: March 22, 2020, 12:16:26 PM »
They've eliminated their "club card" discount for the time being, so everything is full price (all sale signs have been pulled down as a result). not a huge deal, but i really hope they continue offer the senior discount for older folks, who really need the help at this time.

Restaurants & Food / Pizza Sam's closing
« on: March 02, 2020, 11:16:42 AM »
i don't see a closing date, but Sam has listed his business for sale this morning. the listing reads as if he'd like to see it continue as a pizzeria -- but, sadly, he writes that it's "due to health reasons."

wishing him well going forward.

Neighborhood Chat / Virus Mania Strikes Jackson Heights
« on: February 29, 2020, 02:57:26 PM »
This afternoon, the Foodtown was a full-on meltdown zone. every single cashier -- human and self-serve -- had lines halfway down the aisles, and in some cases, back to the meat counter.  full carts, angry shoppers. i haven't seen anything like this in a grocery store since i lived through the Northridge earthquake in 1994.

i was reminded of this classic Simpsons moment.
